Affordable homes w/in commuting distance to Boston?
I'm sure you ladies get this all the time, so I apologize in advance.
I've applied for a job in Boston, and while it may take a while to find out, I just wanted to do some research. We own a home in CT right now, and would obviously have to move. We're not city people, have 2 dogs, and generally like our privacy. Problem is we probably can't afford much over $200k.
The homes I'm finding are in places like Lynn and Brockton, which if I remember correctly are not the greatest places to live. Any thoughts for me?
Re: Affordable homes w/in commuting distance to Boston?
Good luck with the job!
Ditto what Rock said, though depending on how far you're willing to commute, you may have a tough time finding even a condo for that price range close to the city.
I second her suggestion to consider renting for a while, so you can get a feel for different areas. Though if you're looking for privacy and have 2 dogs, I fear you may end up pretty far out from the city - it can be tough to find a place that lets you have more than one. Not impossible, but definitely a little more difficult.
You are going to be hard pressed to even find a townhouse for under 200K unless you are willing to live quite a bit from the city.
I think your best bet would be to rent for a while so you can get a feel for where you want to end up.
ITA. I had a few friends in college who lived in Brockton, and there are some really nice areas and neighborhoods.
Don't get me wrong, there are some not so nice areas as well, but there are plenty of areas that don't deserve the reputation the rest of Brockton has.
I would guess that a $200k SFH is not in the nicer part of any town in MA.
OP, I would look into renting. It will be hard with two dogs, but $200k is not going to get you much of anything around Boston, and if you're going to buy I always think it's good to get familiar with the area first. I'd look outside of 128/95 at towns on the commuter rail.
Yeah, you're probably right.
Hi Aim!
We'll talk off line, but Lynn is passing BSL currently, which sucks. The town is pretty...ehhh.
Now that I have more info I'll shoot you another message on FB.
If you want a 1 BR condo to rent 15 minutes from State Street we are likely going to evict our tenants in another 30 days!
I mean, the eviction gets a huge
but you know what I meant.
Oh no Punky. That must be awful.
Well that seems like a good option
Sorry to hear about the eviction, Punky. Hope it's not for anything too serious.
Thanks for the info, ladies. It's all still just a hypothetical situation right now, since the job process could take a long time.
I think I was focusing on buying because I know there aren't many single family homes close to the city. I think we'll be able to get buy with a townhouse, and renting sounds like a good idea for starters.
Hey Aim
I just noticed your post, and if you're looking to rent outside of Boston, I live in a townhouse rental community that lets you have two pets (cats or dogs). The name of our town is Norwood. There are some limitations on dog breeds, so I'm not sure if it would be an issue for you, but I thought I'd mention it in case you have a hard time trying to find a larger place where you can have two dogs. I take the commuter rail to work in Boston, and the community actually has a free shuttle to the commuter rail. I think my commute is about 45-60 mins door to door. We've definitely had some small issues with renting here, but we recently decided to sign on for a second year while we save for a house. I don't want to pimp the name out here, because I'd rather not seem like a spammer, but if you'd like to ask some more questions, get the name of the community feel free to pm me. I've also lived at another similar apartment complex in the area, but they're single level apartments and I'm not sure how many pets they allow (when I lived there they didn't allow pets but now they do).
