Veggie plants from the Nursery

Today I bought some carrot and onion plants for the first time.

They are in the little plastic black cells and it looks like there are mulitple-maybe 5 plants in each cell. I don't think I am suppossed to just plant them as is, should I try to gently seperate the individual seedlings or do I have to thin out the extras?

Thanks, I'm a total newbie with root veggies.

  • I would thin, very very carefully. Carrots don't like being messed with, but if you leave them close together you'll end up with a big twisted clump. GL!

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman

Yes, carrots do need to be thinned so they don't grow into a huge twisted mess, but as pp mentioned, you need to do it very carefully.  From what I have read, it is best to just pinch the tops off of some of them.  If you try to pull them out, you will disturb the roots of the carrots you are keeping.
