hmm, maybe it's thyme?

I posted earlier wondering if a plant that I have is lavender...but now I'm thinking it's thyme. Would thyme leaves and the stem of a young plant (seedling) have a purplish tint (mainly the underside of the leaves)? I did a lot of googling for images and many that came up look like what I have.

Thoughts? I don't know how to post a pic, otherwise I would.

Re: hmm, maybe it's thyme?

  • there are lots of different thymes & it's conceivable to me that one could have a purple underside of the leaf.

however, the easiest way, IMO, to tell the difference is the *shape* of the leaves.  Lavender leaves are kind of needle-shaped.  Thyme leaves are much smaller ovals (or maybe pointy ovals, depending on the kind).  Oregano is going to have larger, oval-ish leaves.

  • Smell them.  I have both lavender and thyme growing right now, but they're still really little.  The thyme kind of smells like pizza and the lavender smells like those little satchels they sell to put in your drawers.

To put a pic - upload it to a web-hoster like shutterfly.com or flikr.com, then right click on the picture.  You'll see a url in the 'properties' space, copy and paste this into the 'picture url' box that pops up when you click on the tree icon above.  To resize (because pics are usually huge) I like to divide the 'dimensions' numbers in half.
