Well, it's been an interesting weekend.
Last week I had to go to my doctor's office daily for bloodwork/ultrasound to monitor my follicles. When the follicles are pretty much ready to go, you do what's called a trigger shot. On Thursday the nurse said she didn't think I'd be triggering on Friday, that it would be Saturday or Sunday. The ultrasound tech said the same thing on Friday morning. So, imagine my surprise on Friday afternoon when my phone rang and the nurse told me that I would be triggering that night at 10 PM!!
The problem is that we had our very close friend's 40 bday celebration that night at 7:30. Fortunately she knows what we're going through and has been through fertility treatment herself, so I sent her a text to let her know that we had to leave at 9:30 and she totally understood. Of course everyone was running late and at 9:30 dinner hadn't even been served yet. We told our waiter to wrap ours to go and then very conspicuously left the party. Of the ~14 people there, maybe 4 of them knew exactly why we were leaving and the rest are people we're not close enough to share with. So, we got a lot of befuddled looks and am guessing people were wondering what's up with us. Whatever.
This leads to my egg retrieval which was this morning. It wasn't so bad, I felt a little crampy for maybe an hour afterwards but bounced back pretty quickly. The big news is that they retrieved (drumroll please)... 27 eggs!!! For those unfamiliar with IVF, this is an excellent, really high number that would be great for any woman, let alone one who turned 38 two weeks ago.
Tomorrow (Monday) I find out how many of the eggs were mature and fertilized to become embryos. Keep your fingers crossed for a good number of embryos!
UPDATE: Just got the call... out of 27 eggs, 19 were mature (ie, ready to be fertilized) and out of those, 16 fertilized... so we now have 16 growing embryos!! I am beyond thrilled with that result. They won't all make it to the advanced growth stage, but with this number we should have several good ones. This means that we will probably have 1 or 2 really good ones to transfer back in me and hopefully some leftover to freeze, that we can use if this cycle doesn't work or to build our family more in the future.
They'll be transfering 1 or 2 of the embryos back into me on Wednesday. Please send vibes that they stick!
