vent about the 'burbs

i find certain suburban viewpoints so simultaneously funny yet irritating.  some that i've recently noticed:

  • having to park more than 30 feet from your house is some huge inconvenience.
  • having someone you don't know parking in front of your house is also horrifying, to the point that you can actually wait on your porch for the car-owner to come back so you can tell them about it.
  • having to put blinds in windows in the back of your house for "privacy," when the closest neighbor is at least 60 feet back.  (BAHAHAHAHA....my backyard neighbors are so close that they can, i'm sure, HEAR it when DH and i are having a go!)

after spending a weekend in the burbs for a graduation, i am totally fed up.

vent over.

Re: vent about the 'burbs

  • ugh, I used to have a house in the burbs with my dance team when I was in college, and our neighbors were the ultimate supreme parking police.  It was awful.   They would put cones in front of their house to make sure no one parked there, move their cars around so one car was always directly in the middle of their  house with no room for anyone else to park, and one neighbor went so far as to PUSH another car into the middlle of the street AFTER going door to door trying to find out who owned it to tell them to move.  PUSHED IT INTO THE STREET!!!

And the kicker was we lived on a dead end and there was ALWAYS parking on the corner.  So, if you couldn't park right in front of your house, the farthest you would have to walk was probably like 50 feet.

My friend is from the burbs of NJ, and one time when I spent the night at her parents house, there was a note on my car in the morning that their accross the street neighbor didn't want me parking in front of her house becuase when she looked out her kitchen window, my car was in her view.  It ruined her morning because I was blocking her view (of the other side of the street - it's not like this was waterfront property or anything!).  WHAT?!?!!?  SERIOUSLY???

  • Wait, Danielle, seriously? Somebody told you that you ruined their morning by parking your car across the street from her house? Sheesh! We're planning to move to NJ, great to know what our neighbors might be like Wink And we'll be the people whose guests park in front of other people's houses, both our families are so big!

  • It is definitely an adjustment, but it is not that bad.  It is lovely to have a private open space for peace and quiet.  Lisichka, where are you looking to move to in NJ?
  • Agreed.  I hear complaints about this all the time and totally confused.  Even growing up in a place where there was plenty of parking, I had never heard of complaints like having someone else park in front of your house until I started reading posted on the D&R board.  It's not illegal to park in an open space.

Danielle, I too had a neighbor that parked in such a way that no one else could park near him (taking up more than two spaces).  Until one day my roommate and I were able to fit our cars so that we boxed him in (the joys of owning a smaller car).  It was hysterical.  We were able to watch him as he came outside to see his car without any room to get out.  Hahaha! He never did it again after that.

We're looking at Glen Rock. It's a bit further away from the city than I'd like but the schools there are supposed to be really good. I'm definitely going to miss the closeness of everything here in Brooklyn, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. And I'm so excited about all the open space!

  • OMG, Staten Islanders are soooo like this...especially with the parking! Where we lived last, there were parking police, aka people with no lives, patroling the neighborhood. Twice I had 2 different neighbors tell me how to park...after I ripped them both new ones, they never looked at me again. LOL Thank goodness we don't live in that development anymore. Now, we rent an apartment over a 2 family house and our landlords are constantly playing musical cars, It's quite comical and sad all at the same time. =/

We also plan on moving to NJ, but I won't settle for anything less than a 2 car driveway...I'm tired of having to fight for a spot!

Well, she didn't tell me - she wrote a note and left it on my car window.  Very passive-aggressive-suburbia of her....Super Angry

This was in Wall, NJ - not only the 'burbs, but the very wealthy burbs.  Those people are the worst!
