Question regarding photography

I'm looking into photographers for newborn pictures.  My question is that no one seems to give you the pictures on a disc.  They require you to purchase the prints from them.  With our wedding, we got all the images on a disc and were able to load them on our computer so that I can order more from snapfish or whereever when I want to.

So basically without the images on my computer, I couldn't use any of the images on here or on FB?  And if I ever wanted additional copies how would I go about that?  So all I get are the ones I purchase through them?

Is this typical of most professional photographers?

Re: Question regarding photography

  • It seems more photographers are catching on that folks want their pictures on a disk also. It really depends on the photographer. I would ask them right up front. I did that for our wedding photographer. I wanted complete control on prints. For some, it seems the disk can be a part of their regular packages, but other times it can be an additional fee. If it's a deal breaker for you, make sure they know that, they may be more willing to negotiate with you since there are lots of photographers to choose from around here.
  • We got the disc with our newborn photo's. We just paid one flat price, and it included all edited images (we paid extra for her to do our newborn annoucements).

LaTricia is great to work with, we've used her many times, so I'm not sure if she did this because of that- but it's worth a shot?  Give her a call and let her know your my friend, she's been giving my friends great deals!

  • It definitely depends on the photographer and their policies.  Many photographers offer packages that include a disc of images that you can print on your own (with a release from the photographer to print the images).  However, any good photographer isn't going to give it away because if you aren't paying them for the prints, then they basically aren't making any money (there is a lot of time that goes into editing and lots of other things that go into a photography business).

Some photographers don't offer a disc at all because they want to have control over what happens with their images, where they are printed, etc (the print quality from a professional photo lab compared to some place like Walgreens is significant).  However, I have found that most photographers will allow you to purchase a package that includes it, or allow you to purchase the disc from them.

With the wedding photographer, it is basically the same thing.  You are just paying for a package that includes the disc.  They build it into their prices.  Some portrait photographers will build it into a package, or some just do everything a la cart so that you can bulid a package that works best for you.

If a disc is important to you, let the photograhers that you contact know that, and see if they offer a package with a disc of images (it might not be listed on their website directly, but it does not mean they don't offer it).

Oh, and if you are looking for photographer references, Adrian with Canyon Photographer is amazing!  Truly.  I highly, highly, highly recommend her!!  =)

  • I contacted the photographers who did our wedding because we loved our pictures and we got a disc from them for that.  But she told me that it is standard for weddings but not for babies to get the disc...and that they would only release the images if we purchased a canvas of that image, and otherwise it is $75 per image!  Indifferent  I about died.  I was not expecting to get the disc of the images for free or anything, and would still purchase the prints from them to make up the minimum purchase but that just seems a bit ridiculous to me.

I'll think I'll be looking into some other photographers now!

  • Our wedding photog ALWAYS gives a disc with all her packages... engagement, wedding, maternity, newborn whatever it is.  She knows that that is what people want and she thinks it is only fair to do so...  Her website is www.momentsinfilm.com she is in transition of changing her business name but she is simply AMAZING and we are going to use her as well for our maternity and bbay pictures =)

Her name is Jacquelyn and she was sooo easy and fun to work with
