Per Kathryn's request, here's a thread.

It's lame and dumb but whatever, I'm trying.

do you have your AC on yet? What do you set it to?  I didn't want to to turn it on until June but it was so miserable yesterday that I cracked, mainly bc I feel bad for the doggies lol.

  • We haven't put the central ac on yet even though I was really tempted yesterday. We do have the window unit in our bedroom which we use at night sometimes. Our central air doesn't cool off the upstairs enough unfortunately.

  • IDHT - that was our issue last night, the AC didn't cool off the bedroom at all. Of course I'm sure it didn't help that SoBoh plopped his butt on top of the vent all night long.  At least someone was comfortable.

  • We put ours on yesterday.  If we didn't have a dog, I'm sure we would have gone another day or two.  But it's so sticky and gross - I felt really bad for Jackson.  We set it anywhere from 70-73.

  • We cracked last night and turned it on.  I was cooking and had a big pot of pork verde bubbling away and i had the oven on when MH came home and he walked in the door and immediately turned on the AC.  It was probably about 80 degrees in the kitchen - I of course didn't even notice because I was hovering over my pot of porky goodness.

It was just so muggy outside, and inside, and it wasn't cooling down at all overnight.  I think he probably set it to 72.

We'll probably turn it off again if the temp starts dipping down overnight again.  We're sleeping in the basement these days so we can stand a lot more than if we were upstairs.

  • I turn mine on early in the season - probably late April/early May. I have no interest in being uncomfortable plus with all the allergy issues we have, just keeping the windows open isn't really an option.

  • Yes we have our air on. We turned it on several weeks ago, okay maybe like 2 weeks ago. Mainly because it's hot upstairs, even with fans, and well I hate for the baby to sweat it up. Ours is set on 75 all day long.

  • No A/C yet, the first level of the house is really comfortable, the bedroom is a little warm but we turn the fan on our central unit on "circulate" (no A/C), so it just forces air every few minutes and brings up cool air from the basement.  Between that and the ceiling fan, it's manageable for now.
  • Yes, we've had it on for some time now. It's set around 68.
  • I posted about this on FB.

DH turned it on in the middle of the night- which is weird because 1) DS actually didn't wake up- I thought he did because I heard DH moving about, but it was him closing all of the windows we had open and 2) DH likes the house warmer than I do- my ILs don't have AC and he is kinda cheap about running it.

  • Yes. DH turned it on last night while I was at work. I wouldn't have done it yet, but I am not going to turn it off since it did all the work already to cool the house down.

  • I just turned it on for the first time last night. Poor DS, his room gets really hot at night, especially since we keep his door closed otherwise the cat would be in his face all night. If it were just DH and I we probably would have held out a little longer but DS doesn't sleep well when he is hot. We all slept great last night too. I actually keep ours pretty warm...its like 74, but we use ceiling fans too.

  • Ha, we turned ours on weeks ago. We don't keep it on all the time, mainly at night b/c it gets so hot upstairs (where we sleep). This week I started turning it on during the day for Phoebe but set at about 75-76...at night we keep it around 73.

  • I caved and turned it on last night for the first time this year. It was 80* in the house when I got home so I went around and closed all of the windows. We have one of the programmable thermostats. With the AC the average temperature is 75*. I am cheap with the AC and the heat settings. I also change up my vents like we did growing up at my parents' house. When I run the AC I open all of the upstairs vents and close the downstairs vents. That way the cold air comes out and then falls. I do the opposite in the winter with the heat.

I do this too. It does make a difference.

  • Ours is on, we paid all that money for new HVAC, we are going to use it.
  • We turned ours on a couple of weeks ago.  We have one of those things where you can set it to turn the temp up or down at a certain time so typically our air is only on when we're at home.  This really cuts down the costs of heating and air.  In the summer we usually set it around 73 but being pregnant I feel like I'm a furnace so I've been putting it on 65.  DH thinks I'm crazy but I'm just so hot that I need it that low to feel comfortable.
  • Ours has been on for awhile.  We all have major allergy issues so I can't really leave the doors/windows open and it gets stuffy in here.  Our therm is set to 74-75.  I work from home so it runs during the day downstairs but I have the schedule to go down/off upstairs during the day.

  • just last night but we have window units

  • Yep.  It's been on for awhile.  I refuse to be miserable, and if I'm forced to be hot, I'll be miserable.  There are days I'd love to turn it off and open the windows, but DH has horrendous allergy issues.  He needs to come home to clean air, not pollen-laden air.

There's also the fact that the upstairs gets terribly hot, especially Mia's room, and I hate the idea of her being uncomfortable when she sleeps (which is probably projecting because I *really* hate to be hot when I'm sleeping).

  • I gave in on Saturday night when it was 80 degree's upstairs at 8pm.  It's still only at 75 but I couldn't stand the humid air.

  • Mine is not on. I tend to forget it is an option. Since it it so muggy today I may turn it on later.

  • Nope, I refuse.  I'll open up every window we have and make DH miserable before we turn it on.  The basement is actually really cool so he and the dog hang out there.

Ugh I would totally force the dogs into the basement but for Jackson, it's the only place that he hasn't "explored" yet because he doesn't know what's down there, so I'm trying to keep it that way. I was so mad when I turned it on yesterday. I hate AC. I like having the windows open with a cool breeze coming through lol.

  • Ours has been on for awhile. Living in the city near a hospital, it's pretty impossible to sleep with the windows open.

  • I've been running the AC for months now at night...I like to sleep with it as close to 65 as possible. Even before I got pregnant I always get hot when I sleep so this winter we actually slept with the windows open a few nights...and I still woke up drenched in sweat. Poor DH sleeps in sweatpants year round since he is usually colder than me. During the day I try to tough it out; our new apt is on the bottom floor and we have trees (oh, suburbia!) so that helps a lot.

Let's not discuss the fact that I'll be spending a week and a half at my parent's house (in South AL) in June...and their AC situation sucks since they live in an old house. I think I may melt in 90 degrees now.

  • Ours has been on for a couple of weeks now. Like Shandra we have a programmable thermostat. Ours upstairs is MUCH hotter than the downstairs. I think for my b-day present, I am going to ask for a ceiling fan in the bedroom Stick out tongue Our allergies are terrible so we don't keep windows open.

Our ac is set at 78, but it is SO FRICKIN' hot (2 adults, 2 large dogs and an infant) in our room that I am probably gonna set it lower. I just can't sleep.

AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • Nope. Not on. I have sucky sucky allergies, but I just can't justify the extra expense. I am lucky that our house stays pretty cool, so far. Not being able to breath sucks bigfatass, but I want t few months with a BGE bill less than $350. We turned it on one night in our bedroom, but so far that has been it.
  • Ours has been on for a little while now. We'll turn it off sometimes if it's nice enough to open the windows, especially at night. But if it's on, DH has it at 78 during the day and 72 when we go to bed. I never had the 2 different temps growing up so I'm constantly forgetting to set it to 78 before I leave for work. I'm not convinced we're saving a whole lot of money doing this, but whatever.

Also, if I am uncomfortably warm I will turn the temp down. I refuse to be uncomfortable in my own home just to save a couple bucks. Plus this baby is like a furnace and he keeps me unusually warm so I'm even more sensitive to it than usual.

  • Yes, our a/c has been on since some time in April.  I couldn't sleep in our third floor bedroom without the a/c.  Not to mention our dog would be going insane without it.  We usually have it set to 67 at night for sleeping (sometimes lower depending on the day), 70 in the evening when we're home and it's higher during the day.
