New owner of a Kindle :)

I just got a Kindle for my birthday!!!!  I'm super excited! :)  Just ordered it a bright orange case this morning.
Are the ads that show up when it's "off" always going to be there?

Re: New owner of a Kindle :)

  • I'm a new Kindle owner, too.  As far as I can tell, yes, those screensavers are not changeable... however, you can completely turn it off by sliding the switch and holding it there for about 7 seconds.  Then the screen will just be blank.
  • Thanks!  I didn't know that.

From a little googling it sounds like it might be b/c of the kindle I got...I may pay the extra $25 for an ad free kindle.

  • Hmmm, I wonder if I can return it since I already registered it?

You'll have to ask Kindle. I'd probably just suck it up and use the $25 towards more books. But I also hacked mine and got rid of my (non-advertising) screen savers and put on my own.

Hikingnclimbing - How did you hack yours to change the screen savers?? Does that void the warranty?

  • I'm just a nerd like that. I searched online and found a couple different ways to do it. What I followed in the end.... I have no ideas. As for the warranty, I'm not sure, but I could always reset it to factory defaults and do a system restore on it if I did have a warranty issue. I'm not too concerned. But I don't know how any of what I did would effect the new "Ad-driven" Kindle or if Amazon has figured out a way to block it with the latest ones that are coming out.

Thanks, I'll have to look into it. I always wondered why they wouldn't let us load our own pictures for screen savers.

  • I'm so excited. I JUST ordered one from amazon right before reading this. I also got the cheaper one with the ads. Hopefully they won't be too annoying. I was completely against getting an e-reader until today. I was looking on amazon and saw that the price was great. Plus it seems so convenient. I can get books so much quicker than running down to the store for them. Another selling point was the text to voice option (I spend a lot of time in the car) and this sounds awesome! Yay! Can't wait till I get it in the mail!!!

  • Also, I wish they had it in white Sad. Oh, well.

  • I love love love my kindle! At first I thought I might want the white one, but I like the graphite tons because I don't have to worry about dirty smudges showing up when I toss into my purse of click to change pages. The ads might be annoying, but I'd just put that money saved towards getting new books.
