whole milk.....

Which organic or non organic whole milk do you use for you LO?

Re: whole milk.....

  • Whatever is cheapest. We go through so much milk at this point I should just have a damn cow in the back yard. I started off all organic with Ben then realized that was costing me like $200+ more a year and we just can't swing that. So the kids get stop & shop or whatever is on sale at whatever grocery store I'm at.

  • When it comes to milk, I don't think organic/non-organic is as important as whether the cows were given hormones or not.  I like to buy Farmer's Cow which is the CT equivalent to Rhody Fresh because the milk comes from smaller farms, not large factory farms.  It's hormone free, but It's not organic, but personally I think it's better than organic from a huge corporation where they don't have as much control/oversight over the product

  • I just buy whatever like garelic milk but i do make sure it says horomone free.

  • I've been buying the Target Archer Farms because it's on sale and not that bad.  I want to switch the household over to organic because milk is 2nd on my list to the dirty dozen to buy organic, but with gallons costing almost $5.99 its hard when regular is $2.99.  I get the half gallon of Archer Farms for $2.99 and that lasts a week for Gianna.

I have some coupons for Stonyfield so if Archer Farms isn't on sale, I'd buy that, but so far it always has been.  The Archer Farms has added DHA which I really like to give G since we don't eat fish and with DH's nut allergies I'm not ready to give her nuts so I want her to get it from somewhere.

Similar to Ked though, I like to buy the local milk too, although the Farmer's Cow did get a little pricey for us when I was PG and drinking a ridiculous amount.  I really need to switch back though as this is important to me.  We've been buying local farm raised beef and pork recently too and it's wonderful.

I think almost all milk now a days is hormone free due to the bad press it got.

This is a very personal choice - if you are feeding organic other foods, go with organic milk.  If you aren't feeding organic baby food (veggies/fruit), I'd say take that step first before milk. DH's family thinks I'm nuts and overprotective for doing the organic/all natural route, whereas my family thinks its normal because they've always grown their own produce and raised farm stock at various points.  I like knowing where my food comes from myself so local and/or organic is top choice for me when affordable - some stuff just isn't available or doesn't make sense (although I do still indulge in my organic bananas imported from Lord knows where with a HUGE carbon footprint).

  • I don't have little ones yet, but when we're using enough milk to justify the $10 minimum order we plan to go with delivery from Christiansen's Dairy or Munroe Dairy (fresh, local, hormone free, reusable glass bottles...)

For now we use Rhody Fresh and get the cheapest organic milk when we need it to last longer (most organic milk is ultra pasteurized and lasts forever!)
  • I go back and forth between organic and local with this. I really hate paying 6 bucks a gallon for milk. Lately I have been buying Garelic farms products. They are in Franklin, MA which is local. And like a pp said, I do think it's better to buy local whenever possible over organic.

  • And before anyone thinks I don't care about my kids, Stop & Shop brand milk says right on it no added hormones...... I'd love to buy everything in our house organic but then we couldn't pay the rent, so choices have to be made. Sorry, feeling mom guilt here with all the folks who can afford "better" for their kids. :-(

do not feel guilty!  As long as there is no added hormones, it will be fine.

I actually was going to give Ella organic milk when I switched her over but most organic milks back then (not sure about now) did not have all the needed vitamins so I just used Hood and made sure it have added hormones.  Now I switch from Hood to Trader Joe's.  Depends on where I am shopping.

Please don't feel guilty! Like you say the no hormones thing is the primary concern. In my household it actually saves us money to buy organic milk because we don't use it fast and the organic lasts longer, so we don't throw milk away. That's the only reason we buy it.

As a consumer who can spend a little more on groceries (now granted I don't have kids yet) - a big part of why I choose to spend more is to drive demand for organic/local/no pesticides foods and help reduce prices in future so that it's accessible to all people, whether they make a million dollars or have to use food stamps. If the big corporate farms see the demand, they'll start doing it more and more and things will get cheaper. I feel the same way about spending extra on renewable energy, etc. That's the power of capitalism! And I do see prices coming down (or at least approaching conventional) on certain organic foods, etc.

Anyway, that's my long winded way of saying don't feel guilty! We all do what we can.

  • We were using Rhody Fresh and were happy with it, but Monroe is so good and I lik that it is fresh and in glass bottles (also no hormones, etc).

I don't drink milk, but G does and I'm trying to get L to like it!

  • I'm with Michele. I buy store brand, Stop and Shop Milk. Don't feel guilty Michele. You do what you can do, and whats best for your child within your means. Just like we do.  And I will add that the only reason why I'm making my own baby food is to save money, not because its "organic".... I want whats best for my kids, but within reason. $6 a gallon for milk is IMHO Fvcking nuts!
  • Thanks ladies. Look, in an ideal world I would buy all fresh, local and organic. But life hasn't exactly been fvcking ideal for me in a while, so I do my best. I make my own bread 90% of the time, I try to buy organic yogurt for the kids when it's on sale, etc. I use reusable shopping bags, reusable produce bags, no paper towels, no cloth napkins, try to make food for the kids but can't help it when the only thing they will eat is freakin eggo waffles and gerber yogurt puffs.

Sorry - was just feeling like a really crappy parent with all the folks who can do so much "better" for their kids. It's not like they are eating mcdonald's every day (hell or every week!).... just touched a nerve I guess. Sorry.
