WWYD?

Yesterday I picked up a prescription from the pharmacy, and tonight I went to take the first pill. I noticed that the label with my name and other info had been stuck over another label. That made me worry, and so I peeled the label up and below it was another persons label. Their name and info had been 'marked' out, but it was still legible.

I really want to go back and be like "wtf, isn't this some sort of HIPAA violation'', but I'm not sure it would do any good.

So what would you do?

Re: WWYD?

  • I would either call and talk to a supervisor...or you can file HIPAA violations with the health department...they'll get a letter of warning
  • Before taking the medicine, the neurotic side of me would probably google the pill image to make sure what was inside the bottle was really the Rx I was supposed to be on.  Then I'd probably call the pharmacist and explain the sitution but honestly me personally, that's probably about as far as I would go.

This is what I would do too- I would just make sure that I have the right prescription.

  • The prescription underneath was for the same medicine. It's like the person didn't pick up their medicine, and so they just slapped the sticker for me over top. I'm pretty sure they're my pills as on the patient medicine card (side-effects, how to take, etc) it describes the pills, and that's what the pills look like.

I think I'm just going to call and talk to the pharmacist, and let them know that I could read the other person's info. I work in a hospital, and I know this is a big no-no when it comes to patient confidentiality. Surely they could have ripped the other sticker off, or just thrown out the container.

Oh well, I had been thinking about transferring my prescriptions to another pharmacy, and this is what will probably push me to do it!

  • I'd take it back and have them refill it in front of you.  While they probably are your pills, i'd still be careful.
  • If I was sure that it was actually the medicine that I was suppose to have I probably wouldn't do anything else about it.  Next time I was there I might bring it up conversationally but not confrontationally.  This point of view probably comes from the fact that I wouldn't think anything of the other person than the curiosity that the pharmacy had done it.
