Cosmetic Surgery?

What are your thoughts?  Has anyone had any who feels comfortable sharing what kind and why?  Sorry if TMI; I am considering breast reduction surgery.  Right now I am a size 6/8 and still losing and am a DD.  Since I've lost some weight I'm thinking my breasts look disproportionate to the rest of my body.  I'd like to be a full B / small C.  I have also had some upper back pain around my shoulder blades and the last time I went to get a professional massage I was told my muscles were inflamed and I have alot of knots and tension.  I think it's all related to the weight of my breasts.

I went for a consultation about this once the summer before I left for college and the doctor suggested I wait until after college, maybe even after children, because the size can fluctuate with weight gain / loss and pregnancy.  I can only imagine what size they will grow to when I get pregnant if I don't do anything about them.

H thinks they are just fine, of course, but is supportive of the idea if it's what I want.  The only thing that would delay me now is that I want to breastfeed and the surgery can affect your ability to do that.  I think I'm ready to go in for another consult.  I have the time to take off work now and there's never going to be a more convenient time with work and eventually kids in the picture.

Re: Cosmetic Surgery?

  • I haven't had any and I don't think I would ever for purely cosmetic reasons.

I have a few friends who've had the boob reduction and they say it is a WORLD of difference in their backs.

  • I'm pro-surgery within the realm of normalcy (ie reduction, enhancement, etc).  Once you get into multiple surgeries to look like a Barbie, then I think it's for the wrong reasons.

I think your reasons for wanting it are healthy, but I have no advice as to pre or post babies.  I think that is a purely personal choice.

  • My best friend/roomate had a breast reduction about 3 years ago. And it made a world of difference on her. First off she looks so much slimmer and her back pain was virtually gone. They did say there is a chance she would have to have the surgery again years down the road if the got big again. And this also might depend on her doctor but she has no scaring.

I would for sure have plastic surgery if I wanted/needed it and had the money to do it. I know I will most likely get a breast lift after I have kids. About 5 years ago I lost about 80 pounds and then gained it back and it took a horrible toll on my breast but I don't want to do anything about it until after I have kids.

  • I totally support breast reductions.  It always seems to produce great results and you;re not introducing any foreign matter.  PLUS the reconstructed boobies?  Sounds like a win:win to me!

  • I haven't had anything done, but I've always wanted to get breast enhancement surgery.  I would love to have a full C cup.  I've always felt insecure about my current size which is a small B.

I'm all for breast reductions.  If it's going to help with pain and any discomfort go for it.

My sister had reduction surgery, and it helped her a lot.  She had been heavy on/off during her adult life but had maintained a very normal weight for several years and already had her two kids when she had it done.  I don't remember her size right before she had it done, but it was more than DD, and she went to what she says is a C, but I'm a bad judge of how big boobs are.

She's so happy she had it done, and was lucky that her insurance considered it medically necessary so the cost was very reasonable.  I think there are some risks in terms of when they reattach the nipples, but she didn't have any of those complications.  I think if you do have complications, it can interfere with breastfeeding.

  • I've been so busy at work lately that I've only been able to lurk but I wanted to chime in on this.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm 5'1, a size 3-5 and a dd. I have really poor posture and my back (in the same areas you mentioned) hurts all of the time too. I started thinking about a reduction more seriously when I found a cosmetic surgery place with really good reviews only 10 miles away from us.

I'd love to be a small C. Or even a medium C. Just anything smaller than what I am right now. I'm also beyond terrified of what will happen to them if I get pregnant. I'm pretty sure I'd look like someone shoved a watermelon in each bra cup and a beach ball under my shirt. I don't have any interest in breastfeeding but I also don't like (tmi?) anywhere near my nipples to be touched. I have no idea if that would be affected or not.

So yeah, I'm 100% for it when its something thats reasonable. If you go back in for another consultation can you let me know what all they say? As much as I'd really like to have it done, I've never had any type of surgery (or even a hospital visit) before and it just makes me nervous.

  • LTB - I've been doing lots of research on it and what I'm hearing is that it's about 2 weeks of recovery at home, not being able to lift your arms over your head and some bruising and swelling.  You can usually go back to more strenuous activity with doctor clearance after about 6 weeks.  The total results of the surgery can take up to 3-6 months to become fully apparent.

The biggest complication that concerned me was the breast feeding.  I have heard only good things about the end result.  I will definitely let you know what I find out from the consultation but every patient is different with different expectations for the outcome of the surgery so your doctor may have a different approach for you.

I've heard this before, too.  A fried of mine did get a reduction in high school, because she was having back problems, and she said it was completely worth the recovery (which wasn't super fun, but I think was a month?).  That was years ago, I have no clue how the process has changed.

Yeah, the recovery time is definitely a huge factor though I'd assume the procedure could only become more advanced and less invasive as the years go on.  I would need alot of help, especially the first two weeks.  It would involve H taking time off to be home with me for awhile which I don't think he'd be thrilled with, but he has the time saved up.  Something he and I need to get on the same page about before I go through with it.

  • I had  a reduction and lift two summers ago after significant weight loss. The recovery isn't terrible (i was left on my own 6-8 hours a day after the first 72 hours). I did have my veritcal incision split open 4 weeks post op which resulted in a much longer healing time than anticipated. I still have no feeling in either nipple, and I've put on roughly 20 pounds since surgery, and the first place the weight went was back to the boobies.

Was it worth it- HELL YEAH. I'm probably going to do it again after kids. My back pain went from constant to almost non-existent.

  • People today have long realized that they do not need to suffer from any dissatisfaction in the way they look. Any body part which does not meet the standards of beauty can be changed in a matter of hours. Why live asking why you look like this and that when you have the option to completely change whatever you think that is making you ugly? And people born with deformities can have the chance to live like everyone else since there are ways to correct their problem. There are so many possibilities that a cosmetic surgery can offer. And this is the beauty of cosmetic surgery enhancements.
