Re: what's a really effective spider repellant?

  • A pest control company that will come spray theshit out of your house. It works great! lol

  • Spiders are tough because you have to spray them directly.  Unfortunately, with their thin legs, walking through a previously sprayed area doesn't have an effect on them like it does with roaches, ants, etc.
  • We had a horrible problem with spiders our first year in our house.  Then we vacuumed the attic to remove all the webs and do this yearly (also making sure to clear any webs that collect in ceiling corners, etc.).  We still get a few, but nothing problematic.

  • We just got through this situation with brown recluses, it took 18 months, just to give you a time frame...  Sweep floors, walls and ceilings at least once a month in places like closets, attic, basement, garages and general storage areas.  Make sure to empty closets and just run a broom or vacuum hose through the corners and along where the ceilings meet the walls.  This deters brown recluses from setting up camp, we evicted a colony in my mom's house that had been there for years by doing this.  Get the perimeter treatment done at your house, and cut branches and bushes back so there is a 2 foot space between the exterior wall of your house and any foliage.

How it was explained to me is that "spiders walk on high-heels, insects walk on ballet flats" (Our Orkin person was a lady!)  Spiders walk on "high heels" so not enough of their foot touches the perimeter-guard pesticide to be absorbed, and you can't kill them with spraying, so don't try.  But insects (their food sources) walk on ballet flats, and can absorb enough of the pesticide to be poisoned, just enough to kill them in a day or so.  Hopefully, the spiders will find the ailing, poisoned bugs and eat them, and the levels of poison will build up until you kill the spiders.

Just consistent "disturbing" of the habitat (monthly wall/high corners sweeping and weekly house cleaning) and perimeter defense is the best way.  We're recluse free two years later now.

  • I was going to say the only REALLY effective way to deter spiders is to constantly disturb their habitats by cleaning.  Since I have allergies, I usually use a vaccum as much as possible, but even just dusting with a rag will eliminate any beginnings.

The good thing is that it's also an eco-friendly solution!  No chemicals involved, just good ole elbow grease.
