Ground cover around a rock stairway/ fountain
Hi ladies, we are renting from family and there is a pretty slate stairway leading to a small fountain/pond. It would probably run if there was some maintainance and a LOT of cleaning. I started cleaning it so I could use the decomposing leaves for the food garden. I would love to stick something in there to keep the dirt from washing awayy. It is a low light area (some morning sun but trees provide shade on all sides) and there are a few clumps of wide, symetrical green plants that might be hosta (will PIP later). We live in western, MA and I might like ground cover with some plants (I could move the green things around, but have no clue how to lay it out in an attractive way.
My question is: what would you ladies recommend for ground cover for the hill that is now just dirt where the leaves were? Ideally, I'd like something low cost, not too aggressive and with roots that won't mess up the stone work. TIA for any advise.

Either pachysandra or periwinkle/vinca/myrtle would do well in low light setting and spread well. My impression is that pachysandra spreads more quickly than periwinkle. Both are evergreen (I'm in NH). I have lots of both in our yard and just lift a clump if I want to transplant elsewhere -- you might check around your property to see if you can find either.
HD has had flats of both at very good prices.
