Neighbor Doesn't Want to Put Fence Up

I seriously doubt they're required by law to split the cost of a fence.  However, they are required by law to keep their animals from trespassing on other people's property. So, if you really want to play hardball, call the city on them the next time their dog shiits in your yard.

Best advice would be to check with your city.

Where I am it is expected that fences are a shared cost that go on the property line, if one neighbor won't pay you can file for the city to pay you (they have a max price per foot, so if you've gone top of the line it won't actually be half) and add it to their property tax.  I've never heard of anyone doing this though.  It's just accepted that it's a shared cost.  If the fence needs repairs, that's shared as well.  I'm always fascinated at the 'no way, never' responses on here.

I've never heard of such a thing. That seems like a crazy rule to me. If my neighbor wants a fence, but I don't, I can't imagine being forced to pay half. So, how does that work exactly? If someone puts a fence around the entire perimeter of their property, do they split it four ways (them and the neighbors on all three sides)?

  • YOU want the fence - YOU will be paying for it.  Your neighbors are under no obligation to cooperate.
  • I would like to say that decent neighbors know the laws for trees and fences. Good neighbor means feelings of love and care with privacy and security. All this comes with different designs of fencing at an affordable price, which gives privacy, and security from neighbors at the same time ensures a cordial relationship.

Ummm, ok?  This post is almost FOUR years old.  Please consider starting a new thread if you'd like to talk about an old topic.
