Mums are blooming

Um, yeah, so I was just outside looking at my front bed and my mums are getting ready to bloom. My mums that bloom in the FALL.

Silly confused plants. Well, they look healthy, at least.

Re: Mums are blooming

  • You need to cut them back if you want them to bloom in the fall otherwise they will bloom now.  =)  I usually cut mine back until the 4th of July and then let them be.

  • I had cut them back! I guess I just did that too early. Not all of them are getting ready to bloom, just the newest ones.

I'll get the snippers out in the morning when it's not so hot ;) Thanks!

  • One of mine is starting to bloom too. The other too are still growing their spring foliage- I don't think I watered them enough the past few months.  I'll just let this one bloom and cut the others back, should they ever reach the blooming point.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. It's not like our state understands what seasons are anymore! We go from one extreme to another. They are probably confused :P

Same here- we went from cool and raining all the time, to 90 degrees and muggy.  I keep cutting mine back until July.  I wonder- if we didn't cut them back, let them bloom, and then cut them back- would they bloom again?

  • Mine are doing the same thing.  They are sort of the poor neglected cousins in my flower bed right now, poor things, so I'll probably just continue to let them be.

I'll be the test case to answer your question. But I probably won't remember to come report back on the status of my mums in the fall!

For what it's worth, I never cut back my mums after they bloomed last fall and they're blooming again no problem.
