Anyone book a cruise through a travel agent...

DH and I are looking to book a cruise for next fall and I was wondering what the benefit of booking a cruise through a travel agent was. (I'm not normally this early for stuff like this but we want to do alaska and we heard they book super early)

Does anyone know if they get better rates than if i just go on the cruise website. I really don't know much about travel agents in general so sorry if this seems silly.

  • A travel agent will give you much better rates than any of the travel sites or cruise sites. My MIL is a TA and she does a TON of cruise bookings. Even airfare/transfers/hotels. She actually has had quite a few clients who've done Alaska cruises (she and FIL did one back in '04 as well). Let me know if you'd like her info. Smile

  • I would check both ways out.  I sent my parents on a cruise about 6 years ago, and it was cheaper to just go through the cruise line at that time.  It may be cheaper to book through an agent right now though.

Yes and no.  It depends on the cruise line, travel agency and what is offered at that time.  Cruise pricing is supply and demand.  One really needs to do their homework here on what is a better value and make sure they are comparing apples to apples when booking.  TAs can get really great rates on cruises for the deals that are "for their eyes only", but I have found a lot of them are the same as what is offered on Expedia as well so it is hit or miss.  Check out Cruise Critic first.  They list a bunch of deals that are currently out there.  Expedia always has good rates as well.  Always make sure taxes and fees are including in the quotes.

Costco Travel has some great deals sometimes and so does AAA.

We booked our Disney Cruise through a travel agent and were given pretty good rates for a Holiday Cruise.  Disney was trying to fill the ship, so they lowered their rates for the cheap rooms.  The TA was also able to get me a special cruise rate on a room before and after the cruise, so that helped.

My mom always books her cruises through a TA, not because of the rates, but because she doesn't want to do the work.

  • Use a TA if you don't want to do the work.  They are free anyway.

But using a TA does NOT mean you are automatically getting the absolute cheapest price available.
