XP - Smoke Smell Out of Washer

DH washed an article of clothing in our washer that was smoke filled. It's a sentimental garment that was left over a relatives house for years who was a chain smoker. Once I pulled it out of the washer the smell remained. We sent the machine through a clean wash cycle with oxi clean and left the door open for it to air out. It's not as bad, but it's still there. Would running vinegar get rid of the smell or do I have to you Afresh? Of course I would prefer something eco-friendly and I can't find the ingredients for Afresh, but if that's what I have to do, then that's what I will do.

I posted this on the Cleaning and Organizing board as well.

Thanks

Re: XP - Smoke Smell Out of Washer

  • I haven't dealt with this problem, but maybe if you sprinkled a bunch of baking soda in there (or smeared on a paste of baking soda and water, depending on your washer) and kept it closed for a few days, rinsed with vinegar, and then again with water it would soak up the smell.

  • I know I heard one time that you can get smoke smell out of a leather coat by placing a bowl of vinegar (or maybe it was vinegar and water, I can't remember) under the coat in the closet for a while.  I'm wondering if it would help to put some vinegar in it and let it sit overnight.

  • I would say the vinegar would work pretty well. I use vinegar and lavender oil in a downy ball to get my husband's smelly uniforms...umm...not smelly. :-)
