Boston?

Chris and I are heading out to New Brunswick (Canada, not New Jersey!) for a wedding in August, so we're thinking about taking the long way and stopping in Boston for a couple of nights.  We were there a couple of years ago and LOVED it.  We usually stay at the Hanscom AFB, because we can get ridiculously cheap lodging, and then drive into the city/to a subway station.

Last time we were there we visited Harvard, went to a ball game, and spent a little bit of time downtown/Boston Commons/Faneuil Hall, etc.  We want to do the downtown area again because the day we set aside last time it poured all day, so we didn't do everything we wanted.

Now, finally getting to my point...is there anything else we must see?  Anything great that's not in the tourist books?

Re: Boston?

  • I would definitely take a stroll down Newbury St (its all shopping but lots of fun for people watching and there are also some great outdoor cafes) Take a walk through the common and gardens(Cheers is just across the street from the gardens), Copley Square is fun as well.Depending on how far downtown you want to go you can always take a tour of Fenway Park.

If you have time I would try to take one of the duck tours. They are SO MUCH FUN! I think I have taken at least 5 of them and have a great time on each one.

You could also go to the science museum, its just over the bridge into Cambridge and then take a walk along the Charles. Or head into Harvard Square, Kenmore Square or Porter Square which are all along Mass Ave.

There is a ton to do, I feel like I am forgetting a lot of it but seriously the duck boat tours are awesome. Big Smile

I was also going to recommend spending some time in the common and gardens, but felt lame for thinking that's as nice of a time as I do - ha!  And, yeah, Newbury Street is a nice walk, as well as Comm Ave (it's a residential street, but so nice!).

If you're around there for breakfast, there's a restaurant called The Paramount on Charles Street that makes a mean omelette.  I haven't been there in years (my sister used to live around the corner, but moved and we haven't been back over there), but it was always awesome.

There is a delicious cupcake shop, I think on/near Exeter, in that same area, but can't remember for sure?  If I think of the name of it, I'll let you know.

I would also second the tour of Fenway.  I've done it probably four or five times, and I've never been disappointed.

  • Dinner and pastry in the North End are a must.  If you're looking to splurge for dinner, then Mamma Maria is the place to go.  I ate there once, and I swear my husband still drools when he thinks about their Osso Bucco. Giacomo's is supposed to be amazing, though I haven't been - my boss raves about it, and it's her go-to spot in the NE. There's always the original Regina Pizzeria, too, if you're looking for something lighter. (Though be warned that there is almost always a line.)    Otherwise, almost anything you find that looks like a hole-in-the-wall and isn't on Hanover Street will be good. (Though my personal rule of thumb is to stick to places that list their dishes in Italian on the menu - any time I've had sh*tty food in the North End, it's been a place where the dishes are listed in English.)

I also always suggest the Harvard Museum of Natural history - the glass flowers are amazing. The Harvard art museums are good, too, though there's a ton of construction going on right now so things are condensed. And the Mary Baker Eddy Library (over by Copley) has the Mapparium, which is really cool. Plus, there's a gorgeous fountain area out in front/back (depending on which way you're coming) that's worth checking out when you want to stop and relax for a bit.  If you're here over a weekend and the Sowa Open Market is running, definitely swing over there for a bit. There are also some really good restaurants in the South End, so brunch and then the market can be really fun.

One of the regulars on the Boston board has a pretty comprehensive list in this thread.  If you check out some of the recent posts over there, there are also some really good restaurant suggestions.

Oh, and if you're going to be at Hanscom, you won't be too far from the deCordova Museum, which is really cool.

Hope that helps! If I think of anything else, I'll be sure to add on.

My husband lived over there when we first started dating! (Just off Cambridge Street, practically right across from the Charles/MGH station.)  And yes, The Paramount is really good, though if you're there on a weekend, just know that there will be a line.

  • OK - I just looked up the cupcake shop:

And a walk along the Charles River Esplanade is also nice...not far from the cupcake shop either :)  We got cupcakes, then took my nephew to a park by the Charles River.

I guess I'm sounding more and more boring about the things I like to do there!  We usually just walk around, eat, walk around some more, eat some more, tour Fenway, eat...

If you're into history (which I am not), you could always do the freedom trail tour.  It sounds incredibly boring to me, but it's a pretty popular thing to do, I guess.  And, like Montana said, the duck boat tours will take you around...and might even give you ideas of other things you can do while you're there.

I'm getting jealous you get to go!  I usually go up three or so times a year, but with the baby coming, it'll be a while before I get back up there...and I haven't been since February :(

Ok, I knew you were going to say that, heh.  I don't care for Sweet - I find their cupcakes really dry, personally. If you're over on Newbury, then JP Licks has really good cupcakes (in addition to kick-a** ice cream.)  In the North End, Lyndell's has good cupcakes, and in the South End, go for  Flour.

Of course, you can always get some from a bunch and then have a taste test,  (Said the fat girl, hee!).

    This is true.

And, yep, my sister lived very close to that station, too (not right across the street, but very near by).

  • Oh I "think" that the Dale Chihuly exhibit is still up at the MFA. If you have never seen his stuff in person its awesome.  And over near there is the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum

  • I immediately thought you meant you were coming to Jersey, thanks for that clarification lol

I have no suggestions to add, just wanted to say that I'm extremely jealous!!  I've only been to Boston once and it was absolutely awesome.  You're making me want to get back up there!

Oh really?  We only ate there once and it has stuck with me, so maybe we went on a good day!  I remember them being awesome!

I would second JP Licks for sure...never had the cupcakes but the ice cream is to die for and the waffles are awesome, too.

Erica - I think my sister has also taken me to Flour.  Is it near the Children's Museum?  It sounds familiar.  I must not have had the cupcakes there.

There's a place called Kick A$$ Cupcakes that was really good, too.  Not sure where it was...near Somerville somewhere because we drove there after we went to a cloth diaper place there.

I guess I should put a disclaimer that I am by no means an expert on Boston.  I'm just telling you about the places my sister has taken me in my many trips up there...
