marriage counseling?

has anyone ever been to marriage counseling? my husband and i are going to our first session on tuesday and i want to know what to expect

Re: marriage counseling?

  • I've been to marriage counseling, and I'm also a social worker.  At the first session, the counselor will probably allow both of you to talk about what you see as the main issues.  The counselor will need to make an assessment of the issues, then start implementing a plan to reach your shared goals.  I would start thinking now about what you would like to get out of counseling, and share that with the counselor during the first session.  You will probably get some "homework assignments" like talking to each other, or doing an activity together and report back the next week how it went.  Counseling is really what you make of it.  If you are both committed to the relationship, and willing to be vulnerable and implement change then it can work wonders!  But remember that it takes time, and it may take a few sessions before you feel like things are changing.  You have to put in the effort, and try to communicate openly with each other even if it's awkward at first.  Good luck!

  • I have not been to marriage counseling yet, I try to talk to my husband about going and he shoulders me away because "we don't need it and its just another expense we don't need."

As a student at the Junior College I am able to get free counseling, on my own or with my partner at no cost.

Even though things are going pretty well, I feel with the past mistakes and chaos in our relationship it would be good for us.
