Zucchini blossoms

Hello! I'm new here and can't wait to start getting advice, socializing and getting to know all of you marvelous ladies!

In the meantime, this is my first year really attempting to garden! And it's sort of a success and a failure.  3/4 of my vegetables have died and just about all of my flowers didn't take. Failure. However, I discovered zucchini blossoms today! I really thought they zucchini were dead or at least dying. But alas, they are springing up with a vengance!

I just had to share my feelings of elation over my first ever vegetable with someone other than my husband... He wasn't as excited as I was.

Re: Zucchini blossoms

  • Congrats!  it feels great, doesn't it?  I was so excited, giddy really, when I saw my first tomatoes yesterday!
  • Awesome. I always get excited over new herbs and veggies in our garden. It's funny, I am online googling squash blossom recipes.
  • Awesome. I hope you like zucchini because they'll just go nuts.

What failed on you? Depending on your region it might not be too late to plant starts.

Also, some stuff is very easy to grow from seed. I've had very good luck with lettuce, basil and nasturtium, even later in the season.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
  • also curious which plants failed on you, maybe we can help you troubleshoot!

my zucchini are getting big leaves now, no blossoms yet.

my snap peas FINALLY got blooms almost 3 months after I planted the seeds, I was about to pull them in frustration thinking they were dormant.

  • Oh gosh, what didn't fail? Habaneros, jalapenos, cucumbers, tomatoes and tomatillas.  I think I shocked them when I moved them outside.  We got a bad heat spell and I'm pretty sure they didn't like it, so they just shrivled and gave up on life... But I do think I am more prepared for next year!

Although I'm so beyond open to taking any advice! Especially when it comes to gardening.  I was wildly unprepared and sort of flew by the seat of my pants this year.

I really want to toss some Panko on the blossoms and fry them up! I saw someone do it on Chopped. It look amazing!!! :)

  • its so hard to grow from seed w/o a "real" setup like a greenhouse. I get most of my veggies in plant form.
  • yeah I don't mess with starting my own seeds indoors as I don't get enough light for them.  I buy starts at a charity plant sale for about 50 cents a plant.  I did sow my snap peas and cilantro directly in the garden this year and have had good success, they've just taken a long time to mature and I'm impatient!

Not sure where you live, but it's not too late to plant peppers and tomatoes if you pick up the plants at a garden center.  Even HD/Lowes have them although I usually try to buy mine from local places.

dh noticed our peas were growing fast last night so we may have some for dinner tonight!

  • I started my cucumbers and squash from seed but I sowed them directly in the ground outside.  I've had no luck when I try to do the Jiffy pots and transplant.  I also did lettuce and spinach from seed (direct sow).  Everything else, I buy as plants.  Starting out, it is definitely easier to start with plants rather than seeds.

  • Ok, so it's not just that I'm a gardening dummy! I thought the jiffy pots were difficult. Maybe I was way too ambitious this year. I had basically an entire garden center on my back porch, taking over everything! It got out of hand quickly.
