Mover recommendations?

Does anyone have some recommendations (or horror stories) of local moving companies?  We are moving from Harford to Anne Arudel county at the end of the month, and I need to get some quotes.

I've never used paid movers before, but I'm so excited that after 18 years and 10 moves (3 with DH), I've finally convinced him to pay people! Partially because I said I will not be moving a single box this time.  But I need to find some good movers so we don't regret this decision.

  • We used Movers USA and liked them.  www.1movers.com

They were affordable, fast and sufficient

  • I know a lot of people have used Thompsons. I don't have any first hand experience, but I've never heard a bad review of them.
  • Last time we used Short Hop and they were great.

We used Thompsons.  They were very accommodating to our early moving time (they packed up a truck with most of our stuff the night before). The movers were all nice, and nothing broke!

  • We used Perry Movers and loved them.  They were very nice and easy to work with.  My sister has used them twice, and my grandmother.

  • Thanks :)  Sound like some good stories, which is reassuring.  I know there are shady moving companies out there, but maybe that turns up more with long distance moving?

Ditto on Thompsons. Our closing was a little precarious, and they were super accomodating. They were efficient, on time and did a great job.

Also, movers are one of the people I always offer to pay in cash. It usually gets you a discount.
