Colonial Williamsburg question

For those that have been to Colonial Williamsburg how kid friendly are some of the taverns? I just recently received a call from the hotel about reservations and buying tickets. I'm not sure what kind of mood A's going to be in while we are on vacation. Should I make reservations? Most of the restaurant require them. Does anyone have a recommendations for a restaurant to check out?  Tickets for just Colonial Williamsburg run $41.95 online or $45.95 if purchased that day. Then they have combined package for CW and Jamestown/Yorktown for $79.00 per person. I'm not sure how long it's going to take us explore CW. We most likely won't be arriving to Williamsburg until 4p.m on Friday night. So really we only have two full days in CW, then we head out early Monday morning.

I'm just looking for some advice.

Thanks!

Re: Colonial Williamsburg question

  • We went last fall and had a good time.

We decided not to buy the tickets.  You can walk around Colonial Williamsburg for free, you just can't go into any of the buildings that have a flag out front.  Since DD was only 9 months old at the time, and the buildings aren't stroller friendly we decided to hold off on the offical tour until she is a bit older. She was sufficently amused with the toy shop in Market Square and the squirrrels chasing each other on the lawn anyway.

Since our in-laws were with us on the trip we didn't take DD to the tavern with us.  I did see familes with children there, but they were a bit older like 6 -8 years old.  But we had a late reservation, so maybe we just missed the younger set..  The menu changes seasonally and I am not sure if they have a kids menu.  But, you can call and ask.  This may not be a problem for you depending on what A will eat.

If you want to go to one of the taverns you really should make a reservation.  We were there off season and the only slot we could get when calling Friday evening for a Saturday reservation was 8:30 pm.  I think it is a little easier to get reservations for lunch.  In and around Market Square there are a lot of nice child friendly restaurants, so there are plenty of choices if you don't want to go to one of the taverns.

Also, you may want to look into getting a yearly pass for CW...  I don't recall the exact price but I remeber thinking that it seemed pretty cost effective.

I have never been to Yorktowne so I can't help you out with that.

  • Do you mean Christiana Campbell's or Kings Arms? If so, the food isn't very good anymore. They used to have amazing food when I would go as a kid with my parents but now it's just a really long wait for crappy food.

Okay well this settles it then. No reservations needs. We will just play it by ear.

I never found anything about the places being stroller friendly. Now that I know it's not, we will most likely just wear her.

  • The outside areas are fine for strollers, but  a lot of the buildings are small and tight,  I remember the silver smith place and the book making place were pretty cramped.  Also most of the buildings have to go up or down about 5 steps to get into.

Very true, the taverns are really overrated.  I went to William and Mary and spent TONS of time in CW/Jamestown Area & Yorktown.  In CW: The Cheese Shop has amazing sandwiches.  Berret's Restaurant in CW (corner of Richmond and Francis St, I think) has an outdoor "Taphouse" that is super kid friendly.  Good food, good drinks.

Depending on how old your kids are, they may enjoy the ghost tours that you can do in the evenings in CW.  Yorktown has a great beach, and Jamestown is a really fun place to explore too. (There's a beach in Jamestown, but it's pretty tiny--you may hear it called College Creek; all of the college kids go there).

Msg me if you want any more recommendations or have any questions :) I loved my time in Williamsburg and try to get down there often!
