CSA pickup - what do you use/how do you store veggies?

this is my third time doing a CSA but yet I don't have a good routine/solution! generally my friend picks up the box and then we divide up everything at her house. I bring my reusable grocery bags and produce bags. but usually the veggies are wet and dirty. makes my bags all dirty! and the bags just don't hold the stuff the way the box does. maybe I should just bring a box... also we tried those green bags last summer for storage and we hated them. i don't like having the dirty veggies in the fridge not contained in something and I don't always wash things right away b/c that can make some stuff spoil faster. what do you do? TIA!

Re: CSA pickup - what do you use/how do you store veggies?

  • I use the nylon material type of reusable bags - those seem to dry easier and clean up better.

For greens: I rinse and chop and put in plastic bags (the gallon size works well if you get a lot). Lettuce in a salad spinner.

Everything else goes in a plastic bag. The only thing I can think of that I don't wash & prep right away would be root vegetables or things that don't go in the refrigerator.

ETA: I know plastic bags aren't super "green," but they are super convenient and I reuse them as they are just storing clean greens.

  • If you're not liking reuseable shopping bags, maybe a basket might work better.  I've been eyeing this one for awhile.  It's very popular in Europe where no one uses disposable bags, and it collapses for storage.

I also store my veggies in plastic bags.  I know that's not very "green", but neither is throwing away spoiled produce.  I tried my reuseable produce bags in the fridge and leafy greens get floppy much faster than in plastic bags.  I do lots of green stuff as I'm sure you do, I try not to sweat the occasionally non-green item.

  • I use one of those foldable picnic coolers to pick up my stuff in. It stays cold and if it is raining on pick up day, then I don't have to worry about soggy stuff since it is a far walk back to the car. I store everything in pyrex exepct for leafy greens that are stored in a large plastic box. I like to keep stuff sealed so it doesn't go limp fast. Root crops get stored in the pantry. Potatoes and onions are not stored together. Herbs are stored like a bouquet in the refrigerator. Tomatoes are kept on the kitchen table.
