If you were me . ..

and were going to graduate school at Penn, where would you live? I know I've asked this on here before, but I have family in Jersey (near the PATCO line) and am just beginning to wonder if it would be crazy to live out there? Any recommendations are appreciated. Also, I need to live in a place that accepts dogs. Otherwise, my requirements are pretty loose. TIA ! !

Re: If you were me . ..

  • I don't think it's crazy to live in NJ... it's a pretty easy commute due to Patco.   Maybe Collingswood area?

Check craigslist for postings for home rentals - your best bet for accepting dogs without a hefty fee (and to make it easier so you get a yard) is a private owner as opposed to a complex and a lot of private owners post on craigslist.

  • I personally would not.  I would get a place close to Penn - University City is pretty safe and there are places that allow pets.  I would also look at Center City

Use the Patco (which is great) to go visit family in NJ.  If you are getting temporary housing while you go to school, why wouldn't you want to live near school?  Is it because you are new to the area and don't know anyone?

IMO this is a no-brainer, it just seems like a waste of time to be going to Penn and getting a place in NJ.

  • i would live near rittenhouse or fitler square and take the bus, bike or walk to penn.

grad school often has late hours of classes or studio or meetings or other work and you dont want to have to commute far late at night when you are exhausted.

  • Thanks for the advice - I would personally prefer to live in Philly, just to be close, and to experience living in the city. I was just asking because I hadn't really thought of living in Jersey until someone asked me where I was planning to live.
  • It's doable though not ideal. Both my sister and her BFF lived in collingswood and went there. The issue would be safety if you have to work or study late.

  • For the reasons listed above I agree. You will have a pretty easy time renting a place in west Philly with a dog. Clark park is wonderful for dogs too.

I agree with this. It would be most convenient for your daily life to live closer to school. Try Philadelphia.
