do you think this is a dumb idea

I've always wanted to throw a surprise roast for my husband when he gets his PhD. The details of the event are what's tripping me up but I still love it as an idea, know what I mean. It would be in addition to a regular graduation party and likely just involve close friends.

Re: do you think this is a dumb idea

  • I think its adorable and would be a blast.

We had a roast for my FIL's 70th birthday and it was a blast.

  • can you tell me more about how you did it...I posted in on another board and they were telling me that it's odd and I just don't see it that way
  • Are you referring to the kind of roast where people get up and talk about the guest of honor? If so, I think that's a great idea.  There was one at a retirement party I went to recently and they had a podium where people went up and spoke. Everyone really enjoyed it.

  • The one we did for my FIL, we had a sit down dinner (that was a surprise for him - he thought they were going to a retirement dinner for one of his wife's co-workers)

Anyway. ..  they told people in advance it would be a roast and asked ~ 5 or 6 people to come prepared to talk - w/ a funny or embarrassing story.

So, his best friend from childhood told some silly story, several co-workers told stories, each of his kids told a story, some friends, etc.  My BIL and one of FIL's friends acted as sort of Master of Ceremonies, introducting people and explaining their connection to FIL, etc.  Then at the end, they invited anyone else to come up - and I think only one or two people did.  And, then FIL got up, thanked everyone and talked about how much this meant to him, etc.  It was sweet.
