reupholstering?

we have a recliner couch that could really use new fabric on top, as well as some more padding (particularly in the arm rests). Anyone have any recs on who does this? Or know approximately the price range we'd be looking at?

We're going to check out dock 86 in the next few weeks too.

Re: reupholstering?

  • I just had a chair reupholstered by Strippers on Selby, and I was really happy with their work.  If you mention that you saw their website, they will let you bring in your own fabric with no extra charge.  I went to the fabric outlet store SR Harris and found some great fabric for $6.50 a yard.  There's literally thousands of bolts to choose from there.

did they come do it at your home, or did you have to bring it in? We'd have to weigh that into our decision too.

Are you comfortable sharing what you paid? I know a couch will be more, but it would give me a starting point.

  • Our chair fit easily into our SUV, so I didn't bother asking if they did pick up or what they charged for that.  They estimated that the chair would take 8 hours to do and the total came to about $450 for labor, materials, and tax (plus the cost of fabric, which I bought seperately).  It is a fairly large chair with seperate seat and back cushions.  I got quotes from several places, and this was the cheapest. They were also the best with email communication.

  • thanks! I'll probably send them a quote request by email, but I'm guessing we'll be better off going to dock 86, price wise.

  • Are you debating between reupholstery and buying new?  Dock 86 has some great selections.  We just bought a couch and chair there a few months ago.  We had them deliver to our house, and the movers were really nice.

well, we need something for the playroom downstairs, and our upstairs couch is ratty.

We were debating buying one new and reupholstering the ratty couch too...I wonder if I could find a good DIY tutorial for the one couch...
