Refinishing fake wood/particle board. WDYT?

Has anyone ever done this? I have three pieces that I want to do in white, one is solid finished oak, one is mdf/particle board that's been painted and the last one is mdf/particle board that has this wood look contact paper on it. Do you think it would be a waste of time to try to refinish the fake ones? I'm afraid that I start to sand them and then they end up ruined. Id rather have them the way they are now then ruined. I think I can get the wood contact paper off with wallpaper remover, but i really have no idea. WDYT?

  • Are you wanting to re-stain it white?  If you want white, I would suggest priming (with oil based primer) and painting it.

  • Just did it this weekend.

I painted with an oil-based primer then painted. It looks great!

  • A little bit before I realized it was kinda pointless. If there's any finish at all, I'd sand a bit.

You might also be able to use a liquid deglosser.
