Doctor recommendations...Portland area

Well, now that DH has officially completed his first day at work (!!!), we officially have health insurance...

I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for:

- ob/gyn - I looked into Coastal Women's in Scarborough and Women to Women in Yarmouth...at the time, they were way too pricey to pay out of pocket, but seemed like they may be good options?

- dentist

- eye doctor

We're definitely willing to drive slightly out of Portland, if necessary...thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Re: Doctor recommendations...Portland area

  • I go to Coastal womens and really enjoy it, the atmosphere is amazing! I have been seeing dr.slager, she is great

I've heard Generations is very good too, I have a number of coworkers who go there

I got to aspen dental in sopo (I don't love the doctor there, but I like that they took my insurance and are efficient about things!)

I used to go to Generations (Dr Hodgson I believe was my DR) when I lived in S. Maine.

I personally did not like Aspen Dental at all the few times I went. I felt like they were giving me a huge sales pitch at the end of the visit. I don't think I ever actually found a dentist I liked down there, so I'm not really any help!

  • I'm pleased with all of my health care providers in Portland.  DH also goes to the same dentist and eye doctor and has no problems with them either.

    I see:

Dr. Carol Vaughn (F) at Generations for my OB but only because I used to go to someone else at Martin's Point as my general doc which included my annual girl exam, but she moved on. (DH still goes to Martin's Point.) That being said, I love Dr. Vaughn and will very much enjoy having another baby under her care.  I just wish I had a normal everyday doctor to do annual exams.

Dr. Tracy Giles (M) at his practice on Washington for my eyes.  As a bonus, the glasses fitting/ making guy is also great.

Dr. Shane Bryant (M) at North Deering Dental is my dentist.  The hygienists I have seen have also been great.

  • I'm not much help with an OB rec since I just see my PCP's Nurse Practitioner and I'm not a huge fan of her. My best friend goes to Coastal Women's and I'm definitely thinking of making an appointment with them in the near future.

I really love my dentist's office, I go to 1330 Dental on Congress. I see Dr. Nalchajian and he's really really nice if a little chatty. I've seen 3 different hygenists for cleanings and all of them are really awesome.

I could rave about my eye doctor for hours. I see Dr. K at Harborview Eye Care in South Portland. He's just fantastic. Highly highly recommend him and the practice in general.

  • I'm new to the area so I am probably not much help! However, I go to Aspen Dental for a dentist (as does my husband). I havent been to the one down here yet but we went to the one in Topsham when we lived that way.

My OB is in Brunswick, but a very close friend of our family, Dr. Churchill used to work at Coastal Women's and I have heard a ton of great things about them so I recommend them, though I personally have never been there.

  • My friend is a part time hygienist at Dunstan Dental in Scarborough and it sounds great!

  • I highly recommend Coastal Women's. I had to deal with them a LOT since I had a lot of complications with my pregnancy and met just about every doctor there during my hospital stays :) I have no other Dr recommendations since I'm down in Kennebunkport.
  • Thank you all so much...it is so appreciated!  Going in blindly is scary...and it is insane how many people I've met since moving that don't have insurance and haven't been to a doctor or dentist in a while, so they haven't been much help in this area.

Now off to the daunting task of comparing your recs with the database on our insurance company's website...thank you all again!
