If it's only 10" I'd grow it out in a large pot for a few years (a hardy pot).

I have 6 Japanese Maples and only 2 are in the ground. I intend to sell one of them eventually, but for now I am enjoying it and carefully shaping it.

Good to know! Thanks! Would a whiskey barrel work or probably too big for a  10" tree.

You really can't go too big, but be advised that whiskey barrels rot.

  • I have two.  The one in direct sun is flourishing while the one in the shade is not flourishing. It is doing okay but it does not have the growth or depth of color that its twin does.  They were both planted at the same time.
  • How big to these get? Do you think it would look nice here in my garden near the street? It is the sunniest spot on our property - was thinking maybe near the big rock. Do they end up more like a shrub than a tree?

Definitely more tree than shrub. I have a bloodgood (=bloodleaf) that I expect to get about 15' tall, maybe a little more? They're usually about the same width as they are tall. They don't grow terribly fast, though. Ours was about 2' tall when we got it, and 3 years later it's about 4' tall.
