GIANT salvia plants

Hello!

I have 3 May Night salvia plants - they're huge.  Love that, but they're falling down under their own weight.  Other than staking them up like tomatoes (not so appealing, they're in front of our house) what do you recommend?  They're about 3 feet tall now and 3 feet around.  Thanks!

If you don't like the looks of stakes, use invisible stakes (made of black wire or fishing line). Otherwise, cut them back.

Mine are like this too right now and they need to be split really bad. (Which I can't do now till the fall).

I just keep cutting them back for now to make them look full and not flop over. I cut them halfway back 2 weeks ago and already need to do it again.

  • Do you just trim right off the top of them?  Or do you trim out entire stalks?  And this splitting, how do you do that?

I take a gardening scissors and just cut halfway down from the ends of each stem.

As for how to split, you should probably google the "proper" way to do it, but what I do is just dig the whole thing up, hack it in half with a shovel, and replant. lol (I guess it just depends on how may other pieces/plants you want.)
