DH is interviewing for a job in Elmhurst and we currently live in metro Detroit. Can anyone tell me a little about places to live with a reasonable commute to Elmhurst?
We currently live in one of the best school districts in Detroit area in an upper middle class neighborhood with working professionals. We have a son so schools are high on our priority list. I know Chicago is more expensive than Detroit is, but we have decided to downsize a little since I would be quitting my job when we move. We prefer to stay around 300K max which is a significant downsize for us. Is that even possible in Chicago area in a great school district? What areas can you recommend that may meet our needs? Help! We are looking at a few other cities right now and this is overwhelming....
Thanks!
Re: Possible relocation to Chicago....help I have questions
Elmhurst itself is lovely, and you may be able to find something in your price range there. Also look at Lombard and Wheaton. Glen Ellen may be too pricey. Further south, Darien feeds into Hinsdale South, which is a great high school. Closer to the city, you could try Oak Park, River Forest or Forest Park, but that might be less possible at your price point.
All these locations are in the Western suburbs, not city itself, as you are coming from the suburbs.
I am from this area and agree Elmhurst is great. Villa Park is very close but I personally wouldnt want to live there. Not so great schools.
However, I would stay out of Darien... I went to Hinsdale South and while this was a good school when I went, it is quickly becoming horrible. They have moved a ton of section 8 into this area and it causes a lot of trouble. I have moved south of this area now and would NEVER consider moving back. I think Willowbrook is decent if you can get into Gower grade/middle school and Hinsdale Central. Also beware of Burr Ridge... realtors will try to convince you the schools are great and they are not, at all.
Downers Grove, Lisle, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, La Grange and La Grange Park are also decent areas and fairly close. Lemont is a little south, is a small town with good (small) schools and very affordable but would be about a 20-25 min drive.
