Anyone have a countertop compost pail?

We're going to start composting and I need to get a counter top pail for the kitchen.

I'm looking at these two:

oxo plastic pail

simplehuman stainless steel pail

The oxo one appeals to me because I can throw it in the dishwasher, but the simplehuman appeals to me because it's so sturdy and won't rust.

Thoughts?

Anyone have a pail they can recommend?

Thanks!

  • I have this one and I love it:

Not gonna lie, I bought it because it's pretty and fits in the style of my kitchen. It does keep the any bad smells in and I haven't had any issues with it thus far. As far as washing it, I just rinse it out every time I empty it and then hand wash it every other week or so.

  • I have the same one as anbenson, in white. I love it- there's never any smell. I did notice that if I left it full for 4-5 days then it would start molding. Try to empty it every other day now.
  • This looks great! I think I'll try it.

    Thanks!

  • We bought this compost crock for holding scraps, I wanted something pretty.  It comes with a filter so there are no smells.  It rinses clean easily.

  • I have this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Q7CSN2/ref=oss_product

its smaller than the others that look like it. I thought the others were too big. you can get the larger ones at crate and barrel.

it never smells, works great! my only complaint is the outside looks yucky sometimes. I used to have a trash can made with a similar finish and that always looked dirty too. its a hard to keep clean/streak free material.

  • I ended up getting the one from World Market since I had a coupon there and it's awesome!

    Thanks for the recs everyone!

  • I have a gallon sized stainless steel one from Amazon (I want to say I paid around $20-25 for it). My friend is really really "green" and actually worked as an environmentalist for a while and when I was looking into composting, she told me to get a stainless kitchen bin for it. I can't remember exactly why, but she said it was better long-term then any of the ceramic ones...so that's why I went for that kind.

ETA: THIS is the one I have and I'm very happy with it. It's a great size. We fill it up about every 3-4 days.

  • DH and I use an old gallon ice cream tub (like you get generic ice cream in).  I have quite a few of these in the house.  One for scrubbing floors, one under the sink to hold dish rags until wash day, one in the bathroom to hold hair barretts etc., and of course the one for compost scraps (it never smells! the lid is tight and it works for us!) and I'm sure there are more around the house that I can't think of right now.  I haven't had one break yet, so I think it's the best form of repurposing!

  • How often do you take out the compost with a pail?

I have a stainless mixing bowl that I got at a garage sale for 10cents. I use that for compost and take it out about every other day. Longer than that and it starts to mold. Rarely does it stink.

I'm just trying to figure out the benefit of a fancier pail.

Looks nice and keeps fruit flies from taking up residence in the kitchen.
