Carpet Product Suggestions?

The house we just bought has brand new carpets. We have a brand new puppy. Because of this, I  decided to get the Vectra carpet treatment sold on Home Depot's website. It is supposed to make the carpets easier to clean & help prevent stains, etc. So far, I'm not seeing a big difference between them & the untreated carpets at my old apartment :-/ Does anyone have any suggestions for other products to repel stains? I know about Scotch Guard, but I haven't been able to find anything but the small cans, they would get expensive FAST! Also, if you have a favorite spot cleaner, feel free to suggest that too :-)

Most carpet, especially the newer stuff, has built in stain resistance.  See if you can find out the brand of carpet before you do anything, plus I've never heard of anyone Scotch Guarding carpet before.

I have a Bissell Spot Bot and it works well enough.

If you watch the puppy closely you won't have to deal with any accidents, consistency is key.  Now is also a good time to work on crate training while you aren't home further preventing any accidents.

Do you like your Spot Bot?  I've been considering it a lot since our long-haired cats get hairballs a lot even with all the anti-hairball food we feed them.  I get tired of scrubbing the carpet.....

  • We have been crate training and it's going very well. She actually rarely has an accident in the house. I'm not just worried about her, but other stains too. We'll eventually have kids and we will spill things. I have also been thinking about getting a Spot Bot but I wanted to do a little more research. I bought one of the Dirt Devil spot cleaner things (I don't remember the exact name of it) on impulse & it's crap.
  • I have the Spot Bot as well and I try to use that as soon as a spill or pet accident happens.  I've been really happy with my Spot Bot.  It does leave a noticeable but clean circle where it was used (even when I use the manual hose for suctioning up the extra water) but I'd rather have a clean circle than a spot.  I use that until I have the time to pull out our big Hoover Steam Vac.

I also pre-treat most of my spots with the Hoover Pet & Stain remover treatment then typically use the Bissell Pet & Stain remover shampoo with the Spot Bot.
