how do i get rid of them. I didn't plant any squash last year hoping that would do the trick, but they are back.
Short of killing each one I see with my flip flop what are my options.

Haha, I had this problem last year too. Usually once you get an infestation, the easiest thing to do is get rid of the eggs under the leaves of your plants and kill the actual bugs that you see (I'd put them in a pail of water with dish soap to drown). Pesticide did nothing when I tried last year.
