Can you trim and shape azaleas and other shrubs this time of year

Just wondering if its too hot.

Re: Can you trim and shape azaleas and other shrubs this time of year

  • You should wait until the blossoms drop off, then reshape azaleas.
  • Generally you want to prune flowering shrubs about six weeks after they bloom so that you don't cut off the buds that have set for the following year. So...it would depend on what area you are in and when your azaleas bloomed.
  • I'm not sure what "other shrubs" you may be referring to, or where you live, but I live in central NC, and I trimmed my azaleas about 3 weeks ago.  I'm not sure I would trim them any later than right now.  They bloomed in April.  We'll trim our holly barberry bushes sometime in July or August -- trimming them during the heat doesn't seem to affect them, but they are full-grown, mature plants, too.
