Planning help for this weekend

My mom and youngest brother are coming in tomorrow night for a visit (until Sunday night).  I was hoping the weather was going to be decent to be outside but it looks to be HOT and HUMID.  My mom is in her 60's and my younger brother is 15 (he's adopted).

Brother wants to go to the zoo on Saturday but I think it'll be too much walking for my mom since she has a heart condition.  Friday she wants to do the DC Ducks tour and some shopping in Old Town Alex.

Since this is the 2nd time my moms ever been here she can't really go on her own.  Last time we did the muesums, and monuments so she doesn't want to do that again.  We've also done the aquarium in Baltimore before.

Suggestions on what to do?  She tires very easily.  I asked what she wants to do and she said she doesn't care.  We live in Burke but open to driving anywhere.

Re: Planning help for this weekend

  • Has she been to Mt. Vernon before?  Touring there might be relatively easy as some is inside.
  • what about the air & space museum out near dulles?  it's apparently got like a whole space ship in it.  would that interest your brother?  there's a lot of walking, but at least it's indoors.

also, a picnic at the National Arboretum.  You picnic (you can park near the picnic area) and then you can drive around to the different areas & decide whether or not to get out of the car (the different gardens have short paths through them)

  • Walk around Old Town and take the ferry over to National Harbor.  The National Harbor is a nice place to walk around too (although all the restaurants are mediocre).
  • Maybe a night boat tour on the Potomac?  Also, what if you took your brother to the zoo early one morning, and left your mom to sleep in a relax.  You could tell your brother he can spend x time at the zoo....
  • Does the zoo rent scooters or wheelchairs? Would your mom even go for that, if your brother really wants to go?

Otherwise, I agree w/ MrsHabious. Take your brother to the zoo early in the morning. I am pretty sure the grounds open earlier than the buildings, so you could get there when the grounds open, walk around and see the outside animals (who are more active in the cooler part of the morning anyway), then check out the indoor stuff when it opens and be back home before lunch.
