Dame's Rocket

Every year we get a lovely crop of Dame's Rocket in a spot in our yard which we have not yet gotten around to grooming.  However, they get a little tall and I wonder if it is possible to trim them earlier in the season to make them shorter and fuller, similar to what is done to asters.  Would this work, or would it just keep them from flowering?

I know that the DOT mows them down on highways by the thousands every year and they keep on coming up (just as tall).

  • Dame's Rocket is an invasive weed.  A pretty one but still invasive.  We had just a few scattered around the property and for the last 2 years they didn't spread much if at all.  Then suddenly they are everywhere.  I'm now pulling it along with the other invasive weeds and following the invasive weed disposal method recommended by my county (put in plastic bag, label with masking tape, and put it alongside the curb for pick up).

While I know it is invasive in some areas and even banned in places, it is not (yet) so classified in mine.  It has been in our garden since we bought this house eight years ago and has been perfectly well-behaved.  Even if it should manage to conquer the nearby brambles and grasses and escape, it would have to duke it out with the encroaching white pines -- the true invasive weed around here.  I think I know who would win that contest -- hint: the victor doesn't flower.  For that reason, I would like to keep the Dame's Rocket and enjoy its beautiful flowers and charming, cottage-garden look.

Morning Glory is considered a weed by farmers, but not by gardeners.  A weed is a plant that is out of place.  I don't consider the Dame's Rocket out of place in my garden.

  • Well I'm glad it's not taking over your yard.  You didn't list a location for me to know if it was invasive in your area or not.  Just sharing my experience with it.  Better yet you can come have some of mine!

It's a deal -- I'll trade you some white pine saplings and honeysuckle vine!  I'll even toss in a few ferns!

  • I don't need any pines or honeysuckle but I'll take the ferns!  I love ferns.  Are they wood ferns or a more aggressive spreader like ostrich ferns?
