dying squash / pumpkin on the plant/vine

I have healthy looking plants, no bug problem, great fertilization (natural and manual). Problem - my fruit starts growing (to the point the flower on the fruit dies), and the fruits turn yellow, shrivel and die.It has been a marvelous year for weather in Vegas and that helps us dramatically with our gardening. Any idea of the culprit/s? Maybe a deficiency?

Re: dying squash / pumpkin on the plant/vine

  • Check for squash vine borer.  They live inside the stem of the plant.
  • Pollination!!!!!!!!!!! Pollination is KEY to fruit growth.  Depending on the plant the flowers need to be pollinated, and some only last a few days so its key for the pollination to take place as soon as the flowers open up, typically in the morning for squash type plants.

Cross Pollination is what bees and bugs do, and you too! :)

Here is what you can do to mimic Mother Nature.  Get a small paint brush with a fine tip, one used in craft projects, not the kind to paint a wall.  Take the brush and rub it all over the pollen in the flowers, and go to each flower a few times back and forth so the pollen in every flower makes it to each flower.

Bingo!!  You just artificially inseminated plants LOL
