Paging Dr. Google- panic attack when not stressed?

WHAT The F is going on?

Okay so I've had a migraine for 6 days. Yesterday I started feeling better because the RE finally allowed me to take migraine meds and they Rx'd Zofran so I could keep food down. Today I'm really improving even more but all night last night and now all of a sudden, I keep feeling what I can only describe as a panic attack.

Usually if I get a true panic attack it will feel like a hear attack with palpitations, flushed cheeks, etc. This is a little different in that I get a panicky feeling and it feels hard to breathe. It's not actually hard to breathe because I'm combating the feeling with deep breaths. However, it keeps happening. No flushed cheeks, no hard pounding heart but it feels more fluttery instead.  I'm also not stressed. At all.

Do you think this could be residual from the migraine meds? I haven't taken one yet today.  I feel like I'm falling apart. This is so nuts.

Re: Paging Dr. Google- panic attack when not stressed?

  • i'll throw my 2 cents out there -

not sure on the migrained medicine, but as someone who suffers from anixety, your symptoms sound a lot like mine. i have found that my anxiety symptoms have "evolved" for lack of a better term.

this actually happened to me this week. i had several major headaches (not quite migraines) leading up to yesterday when i started having some heart flutters, arms/hands went a little numb and i was anxious. (and this can last for a few days)

that said, it could be from the meds, but sounds like one of my classic anxiety attacks.

  • It sounds to me like you aren't having a full blown attack as you usually would, but are just panicked a bit.  I would imagine with everything going on it wouldn't be unexpected.  I used to have text book panic attacks like you described, but once they were under control would occasionally get bouts like you are now.

It also could be a combo of the transfer meds and your migraine meds.  Have you taken the two together before?  I would imagine the surge of hormones in your body makes you react differently to your typical migraine med.

  • that sounds exactly like my anxiety as well... It tends to creep up on me during times that I am actually less stressed. I am a little backwards in that when I am stressed I don't get as anxious because I have so much to do to keep my mind occupied. When I am less stressed I start to get anxious because my mind goes 1000 mph about some crazy a$$ things. Going for a walk or doing some exercise is the quickest way for me to calm down. I also tend to get extra emotional after an anxiety episode.
  • I've definitely been more stressed in earlier weeks so it does make sense that it's just catching up to me now that I'm making an effort to chill. Go figure. I guess maybe it is just an anxiety attack.

It's possible that the estrogen is intensifying the feeling. I haven't had an anxiety attack since I was pg with Ana. Then, under the influence of pregnancy estrogen, I assume, I felt this way. (forgot about that until you mentioned the estrogen Lucylea) I couldn't nap because I'd wake up panicky and unable to catch my breath for no apparent reason. ...so that tells me that you all are pretty much on the mark.

I guess I need to find some additional stress so that it can't find me when I'm chillin'.  lol!!

  • While you may not feel stressed at this moment you definitely have a lot weighing on your shoulders right now and I think that it could be a response to that.  You also have quite the cocktail of meds/hormones right now and I don't imagine that makes it any easier. You've mentioned that your blood pressure also rises with migraines... could that also be contributing to the way your feeling too? I don't have a ton of advice but I do hope you are feeling better soon.

Really? I'm just a bystander here, but I sense stress. :)

    You continue to amaze me...

I should qualify that. :) Today is not one of those days where I'm clearly upset by something. It's not a busy, hectic, kids not behaving day.

We're just chilling today,  cleaning the house at my leisure. I've made an effort to relax and let things go, so in the moment, I don't feel stressed enough to bring on a panic attack. There's no immediate trigger for a fight/flight response. Does that kind of make sense?

Overall, yes, this cycle has a lot of weight to it, but no more than the usual shenanigans that come up one way or another in life.  :)

I'm just kind of surprised by the panic response my body created, I guess.

  • The only time I have ever experienced true panic attacks (heart racing, trouble catching my breath, etc) rather than just generalized anxiety that comes when I'm stressed, is when I was pregnant, so my guess would be the hormones are triggering it?
