Zipcar experience?

Do any of you have experience with Zipcars? My H and I are debating whether we want to bring one car w/ us to Portland. We currently each have a car, and are planning on selling one, but now are doubting whether we need the other one.

We're planning on living downtown on the West side, I will be working from home, and H will be taking public transit to work every day. The reason we originally wanted to bring a car was b/c we think we'll want to take many day/weekend trips to explore the Pac. NW since we've never been/lived there before. But, the whole Zipcar thing seems very appealing. (And cost effective, considering parking costs downtown...)

I haven't looked into it too in-depth yet (I know, I need to do my own research), but I thought I'd ask if any of you have any personal experience with it. Any advice/knowledge would be appreciated! TIA!

Re: Zipcar experience?

  • We used Zipcar in NYC when we were living there, and it was WAY better than owning a car.  If you can sell both of your cars without taking a huge financial hit, I'd do it.  We only have 1 car now, as H works from home and I only work very part time, mostly at home and it works well for us.  There is also an Avis rental car location downtown if you wanted to get out of town for a weekend, as that would be cheaper than Zipcar :)

  • We've used zipcar in the past when needing more room and when our single car wasn't with us. My SIL uses zipcars in Philadelphia when needed and they love not "owning" a car.
