Hymenectomy

Hi ladies!

I am scheduled to have a hymenectomy surgery next week and was wondering if any of you have had the same experience and could tell me what it would be like and how the recovery usually is. I have been married for 5 1/2 months and my husband and I waited until we were married to have sex. Ever since we've been married I have experience extreme pain with intercourse. When I went to my gyno so noticed that I have some residual hymen that is probably causing me pain. Anyway, hopefully this surgery will help -- I was just looking for any comments, information, or experience!

Thanks!

Re: Hymenectomy

  • I had a hymenectomy 2 1/2 years ago because I had a microperforate hymen. That sounds like what you're dealing with. Sex or even using tampons was not even possible for me before the surgery.

It's an out patient procedure and very simple. I went through a hospital because of my insurance, where they put me under with anesthesia, but they might just do a local anesthetic if you're in your gyno's office. The doctor will go in and cut the hymen away.

You'll have some bleeding (like a moderate to heavy period at first and then it will get lighter and lighter) and probably some stinging during urination for a couple days afterwards. The area will be a little tender (like when you sit down). You're not supposed to use tampons, have sex or take baths for something like 5 or 6 weeks I think (might be shorter for the bath thing, I don't remember), after that you'll have a followup appointment with your gyno to make sure everything is healing properly.

Just a precaution, if the pain during sex has caused you a lot of anxiety, the problem may not completely go away after the surgery because you might be clenching up expecting pain. Keep communicating with your gyno because she may be able to give you dilators or other tools to stretch the muscles and lessen your anxiety.

Best of luck with everything, I hope I helped a little!

  • Thank you so much for your informative reply! My gyno did say that I would be under general anesthesia and that the surgery itself would only be about 15 minutes.

Thanks for all the information on the recovery, that's what I was the most curious about! :)
