furniture delivery ... tip?

A post on the MM board got me thinking about this ... and we bought new family room furniture that will be delivered soon.

Do you tip furniture delivery guys? If so, how much? Does it matter how many pieces of furniture are being delivered (i.e. you'd tip if they were bringing multiple pieces to different rooms in the house, but not tip if it's just one piece?)

I admit, I have not tipped for furniture delivery in the past. I guess I never really thought about it, I figured that I paid a delivery fee so a tip isn't necessary. Maybe I'm wrong?

The responses on MM are mixed, some people are saying they tip $10-20 per person, and others are saying they don't tip at all.

We have always tipped for furniture delivery. $10 each if it's a small piece, or they only have to go to one room on our lower level. $15-20 each if it's a larger piece and stairs are involved.

We were faced with this dilemma last week. We had a couch and a dresser delivered (and paid a delivery fee). I read in a few places that it is not necessary and others said $5-10 per delivery guy. I ran to the atm to get cash for a tip because my H was insistent upon it. The delivery guys didn't expect a tip at all and my H told them to wait a sec if they wanted a tip. Apparently they were totally surprised by this. We ended up tipping about $7 per guy.

The guy who towed DH's car the other night was shocked we tipped him $5.  It seems people are tipping less and less.  I would probably tip the delivery guys a few bucks.  Not $20 though.

And why is it that as soon as DH's goes up for sale something breaks???  Ugh.  At least now we can tell people it is for sure in tip-top shape because it just got checked over with a fine tooth comb.  I HATE CARS.

When we had our couch delivered, the guys had a hard time bringing it in because one piece of the sectional was too big to fit up our stairs. They ended up bringing it in the sliding glass doors, so it was quite an ordeal. We gave them $10 each for the extra work.

When we bought our house in 2008, we had zero furniture. We went to HOM and bought a truckload - seriously, five rooms' worth. I hadn't even considered the tipping element so we didn't tip the two delivery guys and I still feel like a jerk for not doing so. We did, however, give them a case of beer - it was a super hot day and they were pretty stoked. It was equivalent to probably $8 each. In hindsight, I would have gotten cash and given them $10 each, maybe $20 because of the amount of furniture.
