carseat ?

Currently B's carseat (he is rear facing of course) is in the middle of our backseat. This weekend I will be traveling (with him) and will have my car loaded with stuff. I would like to move his carseat to either side of the backseat but wanted your opinion on which side you think is better. I am thinking behind the passenger seat would be best since I could pretty easily look over and see him. The only problem I see with this placement is our dog who would be traveling with us. She doesn't ride in a kennel - she likes to ride on the floor. We have a Grand Prix and there isn't really room in the backseat on the floor so she would ride up front on the floor. Ideally I would push the seat all the way back but then I am not sure B's carseat would fit.

Thoughts?

(I should probably get a different car)

Re: carseat ?

  • I would definitely recommend the passenger side if you're moving it from the middle.  That's where we have C's even though he's forward facing now.  It is nice to be able to look back at them and hand them things if needed during the drive.  Maybe there's a happy medium you could find for the dog and B's carseat by moving the seat halfway back?

  • The passenger side is supposed to be the safest (although I'm not sure why)

  • Maya was on the passenger side as an infant.  Now she's on the driver's side and Cam is on the passenger.  I'm with BP, I recall that side being the safest next to the middle, but I don't remember why.  Maybe statistically less collisions are on that side?  We can't do the middle in my car and it also doesn't work to have their seats side by side, so this is how we make it work.

  • I think I read about the safety of the passenger side, because the driver tends to protect the passenger side more, but I may be making that up in my lack of sleep.  We have had K on the passenger side the entire time since he graduated to a different car seat, because our hookups were there, so it was better for the fit of the carseat.  We did start out when he was really little in the middle, but once he hit the limit and needed to go to a big boy car seat, we had to move him.

  • Thanks for all of your input! We moved it to the passenger side AND made it work with the dog!
