BR: Colic?

Our day care thinks Adrian has colic. Apparently he has been crying most of the day except when there is a bottle in his mouth or when he falls asleep. I have no clue what they mean because Ade is great at home, hardly any crying unless he is hungry.

Do any of you have experience with colic? What was causing it? What helped? Did it eventually go away?

We are headed to the pedi this afternoon, but I want to stop worrying for a bit so I can get work done.

Re: BR: Colic?

  • It depends on who you're talking to. Back 30 years ago, colic referred to a baby who often cried due to gas or tummy issues.  Nowadays though, its more commonly used as a blanket term for inconsolable crying without cause - he's not hungry, tired, wet, or in pain. Here's what WEBMD says

Its very common, usually nothing to worry about, and usually goes away on its own around 3 months.  If it will help you to get him checked out to make sure its not something else making him cry, then I would encourage, but unfortunately there isn't really much they can do for colic.  There is gripe water which is supposed to help sooth, and I've heard that baths also help. Also, certain sounds that remind them of the womb can help - vacuum, blow dryer, or even doing a long shushing sound right in their ear can help. And of course, contact with you, rocking, lying on chest so he can hear your heartbeat, and lots of kisses.

To be honest, it sounds more like separation anxiety though. If he only does it at the daycare. If thats the case, that too will get better the more he gets used to being there. The bottle sounds like its acting as a comfort object, so maybe you can have him bring something else from home like a toy, or when you drop him off, maybe help him "pick out" a toy there, to help him start seeing the daycare as a safe place?

    Hope that helps Smile

ETA: Added a little more to my last paragraph

  • Thanks! This helps!

I really think it is just him reacting to a new schedule and environment, and to not being held or "worn" as often.

  • I agree with the separation anxiety.  My friend who is watching Alex for the month of June has said he's been very fussy most days.  When he's home with us he's fine.  He had his fussy days for sure when I was home with him but it wasn't every day.  On the plus side he's getting his fussiness out of his system with her and he's nothing but smiles in the morning and at night when we see him! :)  He has had three good days now though so I think it just takes time to get used to a new person and a new environment.  Plus like you said he isn't being held or worn nearly as much as he was when you had him so that alone is a big enough change!

This is good to read/hear! Thanks!!

The pediatrician agreed that there seemed to be nothing wrong with him, just an adjustment period. He did get a cold over the weekend though, so we are dealing with the first DC-illness (and he's an EBF baby!).
