Cleaning out clogged drain?

Our shower drain is running slow, and I vaguely remember seeing a green option for that but now I can't find it.  You pour baking soda down, then follow up with vinegar, hold all the foam in the drain, then rinse with hot water? Is that it?  What are the proportions?

Re: Cleaning out clogged drain?

  • We have a trendy new shower drain that doesn't have anything like a hair trap.  When we moved in we tried a bunch of different things to clear it, including some pretty nasty chemicals.  The only thing that actually ended up working was pulling out about a pound of hair with a crochet hook... though obviously this is something to be done only with extreme care.
  • I use 2 pts baking soda to 1 pt vinegar, then let it volcano up and sit for 30 mintues, then a small soup pot of boiling water to flush it out (6 cups?)

This, after using this drain cleaner tool: http://zipitclean.com/ (avail at any big box hardware store).  It says 1-time use, but we get several uses out of it.

  • I second the Zip It.  I reuse, as well.

  • We have this coil thingy (very technical term) that goes onto the end of a drill. Works like a charm!

We use the Zip It also. We've gotten 10 or more uses out of each one. It has been the only thing that we've found that will successfully unclog the drain.

We use the Zip on our sink drains, but the shower drain has a cover on it with little holes that the Zip can't fit down.  I suppose I could try and get the cover off, but it looks to be glued in place.  There doesn't seem to be a way to twist it off.  I swear the people who built our house were incredibly lazy.  Everything is glued down when it's not supposed to be.
