I think there should be Judge Perry teddy bears. He makes me happy.
Re: I love Judge Perry
Were you watching just now when the judge was deciding to let the superimposed photo in? When Baez said that 2 Anthropologists could be redundant (not sure if that was the exact word) Judge Perrys response was awesome. Basically he said that they will talk about redundancy when the third is introduced. State said there wouldn't be a third. Aaaaand done. Eff you Baez. I actually cheered!

Honestly I don't either. When I first heard about it I was in the bedroom not watching and H came in and told me. I though it was crazy to even be true, then I was glued to see what the outcome is. It seems like it will play on the jurors emotions too much. However even though I wouldn't have made the same decision, it's a win for the state and a loss for the defense, and it also seems like he did it in a way to spite Baez. I also know someone who just graduated from UF and Dr Warren was her fav professor so it's a win for him too. I was thoroughly shocked when Judge Perry permitted it though, and also glad I didn't see it myself.
I agree. I just cannot see how it was necessary to his testimony. If I understood his explanation of why he needed it correctly, it was to demonstrate that the tape could cover both her nose and mouth at once. I don't see how a simple photograph would not suffice in that case. An animation of her going from smiling child to decomposing skull? How on earth is that not inflammatory and intended to play on the emotions of the jury?
When Judge Perry came in and read the guidelines from precedent or whatever it was, I kept thinking "exactly, it's prejudicial, etc, I'm sure he won't allow it" and then I was shocked when he did.
Something to include in the appeal, I guess.
Also, why on earth did Warren have to pull a pic from the internet to use in his animation? Nobody could get this guy an "official" photo? Not that it has anything to do with anything, but it struck me as odd.

I know! I did a big forehead slap when Baez brought that point up.
And your point on the appeal, ouch. It is a good point. I think that the Judge was clearly sided in making that decision. Sided against Baez. That could come up in an appeal for sure, huh? Shoot, our taxpayers dollars are never done being spent.
True. It will be the worst if she gets the death penalty. And if I were Baez, every time Perry ruled against me I'd be making notes - "could we use this on appeal?"
I actually thought Baez did a pretty good job with the cross examination of Warren. But, if the jury WAS really bothered by that video (and who wouldn't be?) it very well may not even matter.

Maybe he could use one of his colored sharpies. Lol, I'm such a jerk.
OK court adjourned. THAT was a crazy day!
OMG he's asking for a mistrial again!
To be continued....
You better believe it! Get it all on the record and lay the foundation for those appeals whenever/however he can!
Perry was funny, ruling on the mistrial...what was that all about?
Bah, and why go off the record about the schedule? I want to know when the state is wrapping it up, too!

Wow. No mistrial at this time. That was tiring, I think I need a nap now.
I saw the ruling of the video tape- I was also surprised he allowed that tape.
I quit watching after that.. I had to focus on getting a surgery scheduled (stupid work interrupting).
Haha that's funny! I worked as a server all through HS and college, and was a bartender for a year before grad school. I always said it was good training for my psychology degree.
I think I'm really lucky to have found this field, and I like it so much. It enables me to be involved in the trial process, but I don't have to actually make arguments or research rules of law or what not. I don't think I would like being a lawyer. But, jury consulting enables me to be involved sort of behind the scenes, and the research I do is all about PEOPLE - characteristics, how they'll react to things, how their experiences will shape their thinking about evidence, etc.
I am loving this trial because usually when I'm on a case, we only work leading up to the trial - pre-trial research and jury selection. Then we're done. I try to sit in court for opening/closing statements if possible, but other than that, we move on after jury selection and I don't get to watch the full trial. This has been great to be able to see EVERYTHING! Yay for live streaming!

Basically the state called a witness (Warren) to testify about the duct tape on Caylee's mouth, and this guy made an animation that started with a pic of Casey and Caylee together, smiling. They superimposed duct tape over Caylee's mouth, then over the course of the 2-minute animation, Caylee's face "decomposed" until it was just the skull left. Warren argued that it helped to demonstrate that the duct tape could cover both her nose and mouth at once (and thus could be the murder weapon itself), so he needed it for his testimony.
The defense obviously objected to this, and Perry took a break to think it over. When he came back he sighted precedent that basically said that in a case like this, if the value of the animation to the testimony is outweighed by the prejudicial impact on the defendant and/or is intended to play on the emotions of the jury and encourage a verdict based on an emotional response, it should not be admitted. I thought for sure he would not admit it but then he basically said that none of the evidence in a murder trial is very nice anyway so he would allow it.
