Lansdowne?

What do you ladies think of Lansdowne? Does it seem like a nice place to live? The houses are reasonably priced, historic and quite cute...

Re: Lansdowne?

  • Lansdowne itself is okay.  It is close to Yeadon and Darby which I would consider not nice areas.  Lansdowne is in Upper Darby school district, so that is something to consider too.

  • Lansdowne is actually in the Penn Wood School District, and East Lansdowne is in the Upper Darby School District.

There are alot of great homes in Lansdowne, it's a convenient location as it's pretty close to the city and shopping on Baltimore Pk., plus they have a great famers market.  However, the school district is not the best.

  • I'm not too familiar with Lansdowne but here is a site that may be helpful:

(My organization runs this program, it's great for people who don't want to live in the city but want to have a walkable downtown, access to transit, etc.).

  • I grew up adjacent to Lansdowne. The houses are huge, the architecture is really amazing and unique, but the town has suffered in the last few decades.  Only small parts of Lansdowne are in the Upper Darby School District and the large majority is in William Penn School District (Penn Wood HS).

There are few alternates for education now, since one of the parishes (St. Philomena) that educated many of my peers back in the day is now closing in June.  The other parish--St. Charles--closed several years ago. St Cyril's (in East Lansdowne) barely made the cut a few years back.  One other option is Lansdowne Friends School and that is for K - 6.

If I was a couple that had no plans to have children, I would feel comfortable living in Lansdowne. It is very accessible to Philadelphia and the community is very diverse.  Lansdowne can sometimes be confused with Lansdale, just b/c the names sound so similar.

  • If you have kids or plan to, I wouldn't move to Lansdowne.

The houses are pretty but I hear from people who still live there (most of the people I know have moved) that crime is getting worse.

My parents live there, and I spent my hs years in Lansdowne. Nice houses, only downside is the school district. I would prefer Upper Darby SD to Penn Wood if you are going to have children in public school. Very convenient location for public transportation and they have a nice downtown that has improved recently: Sycamore BYOB and the Farmer's Market are two good selling points.

  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I haven't posted in a while due to the big move.
