Tell me what you know about thrush...

Ugh I am sorry to be the annoying girl with a million questions lately! You would think with a kiddo already under my belt that I wouldn't have to ask so much but little B is a mystery to me right now! We have had a rough few weeks around here- had shots and found out he had an ear infection last Tuesday. Started antibiotics but he was a mess and just miserable so took him back in on Thursday but was told we just needed to keep on the antibiotics and that he was probably just fussy from the ear infection. Then we threw the new rolling in the crib and a million night wakings into the mix. He has been fussy and irritable ever since but I guess I was attributing it to him getting over the ear infection and then being cranky from lack of sleep. It is just so unlike him- he is such a happy, easy going little man so to see him so "off" just is a red flag to me.

The past few days I have noticed some white patches on his tongue and they seem to be getting worse. Could this be thrush? I thought this was primarily something found in breastfeeding newborns and I haven't nursed him in 2 months or so. Could thrush be causing him discomfort and making him fussy? I did a little research and saw it could be connected with antibiotic use which would make sense since he just got off antibiotics yesterday. Does he need to be seen by a pedi or is this something that will go away on its own? I hate to take him in yet again to pay our $20 copay if we are just going to be told there's nothing they can do but at the same time I hate NOT taking him if there is something wrong and am really hoping to get my happy little man back.

Anyone have expereinces with thrush? Or is there something else the white spots could be?

  • Oh no, sorry to hear B still isn't feeling well! I don't know anything about thrush, but maybe you could call the Mercy nurse for advice before you make an appointment. (515-243-2584)

I hope things get back to normal soon!

  • Sounds like thrush.  We know thrush very well :(  Olivia had 8 ear infections before she was 1 and she got thrush after each and every one of them. We were so used to getting it that the dr would write a prescription for for both her ear infection and thrush so we could get it if we needed it.  It is common after antibiotics and anytime formula pools in the mouth.  We were prescribed diflucan I believe, to take orally after each. I am not sure if it goes away on its own. I wouldn't want to wait to find out after how Olivia acted. She was not herself! But the first time after telling the dr her symptoms, he said thrush before he looked in her mouth. Her pour little mouth was covered. It's basically a yeast infection I think. There was one medicine we had before the diflucan that made her vomit exorcist style. It was nasty.  I would take him in and get him going on meds for it. He will be such a happier little guy. I know Olivia was very cranky and just not herself. Hope he feels better!

  • We had thrush when C was about 3 months old.  It looked like a bunch of thick milk buildup on his tongue but the doctor said it can also manifest as white patches on the tongue and along the sides of the mouth.  I guess it is pretty painful and fairly hard to get rid of.  I do NOT think it goes away on its own and we couldn't take C back to daycare until he had been treated with medication for at least 24 hours because it is highly contagious.  It was an oral antibiotic that we had to try to drizzle on his tongue and keep on there as long as possible.  They said not to try to "brush" off the white stuff because it can be really painful for baby, instead to keep his mouth clean and let it fall off on its own.  I think we had to give the medicine for 30 days to get rid of it all and we also used Glyoxide.  That's an over the counter oral rinse you can use a few drops of each day to help with pain relief and cleansing that is safe to use for babies as long as you only use a few drops.  I would suggest taking him into the doctor and asking about the Glyoxide while there.  Good luck, I hope he's feeling better soon!
