So I've been using homemade for a a couple of years now. There is a film developing any tips how to reduce to get rid of this?

Re: Homemade laundry detergent/washer ?

  • I'm not an expert by any means but when I had a similar issue it said to add citric acid to the mix.  One person had even commented that she added lemonaide kool-aid.

    (I never tried it, I just ended up using seventh generation)

  • :::lurking:::

    Did you try putting vinegar in the rinse cycle?

    I put vinegar in a Downy ball and throw it in the wash. The vinegar removes soap residue and helps keep my clothes soft.

  • I don't do vingear every cycle. Do you think if I did an empty load of just vingear it'd help?

    Do you have a front loader? I do the downy ball with vinegar too, but someone was saying how FL washers opened up the ball before it was time. I was just wondering what your experience with this is.

    You could try running a rinse cycle with just vinegar. I've never done it but it should remove any detergent residue in your machine.

    No, I have an older, top loading washing machine.

  • Vinegar didn't take it off so I ended up scraping off what I could and ran another rinse cycle. I'm gonna try the lemonade thing I think.

  • Sorry for whatever reason I read it as dishwasher not laundry, (which you clearly had in the subject).

    It was dishwasher that I read to add the citric acid. I also put vinegar in my downy ball.  I wonder if your mix is off.  I use 1 cup borax, 1 cup oxy clean, 1 bar soap and 1 cup washing soda. then 1-2 tablespoons per load.  I've never had a film though.

    Weird.
