Baby Shower Help Please?!? Repost from 3rd Trimester

My mom is throwing my baby shower...but she is definitely challenged in this area so I am attempting to help.

What are some of the games you've seen or had at your own shower and what kind of prizes did you have?

Also we are having a diaper raffle and are trying to come up with a good prize for this as well.  Any tips would be great!

Re: Baby Shower Help Please?!? Repost from 3rd Trimester

  • Do shower bingo and call it a day. Most shower games are torture.
  • We didn't do any games at my shower.  I don't enjoy playing them at showers and didn't want them done at my own!

If you do play games, I would just do the shower bingo game while you're opening gifts.

Not quite sure what the diaper raffle is...  As far as prizes, most of the showers I've been to have nice lotions/soaps for prizes.  You could always get small gift cards ($5) to local stores for prizes.

  • Some baby shower games are simply gross. The chocolate bar in the diaper one? Ew. Tasting baby food? Ew.

Here are some good, low-key "games" that I've enjoyed at baby showers. Most of these can just be set up around the shower so people who want to play can play and people who don't want to play don't have to:

    1) Don't say "baby" - give everyone a pin or necklace to wear. If you hear someone say "baby" in conversation, you get to take their necklace. I personally love this game, but my mom hates it. Whenever we go to a shower, as soon as she gets the pin/necklace, she immediately turns to me, says the forbidden word, and hands it off. I, however, like coming up with creative ways around using the word, so it's fun for me.

    2) Guess [X] about the baby - have a chart with some feature about the baby that is unknown (weight/height, what time it will be born, etc.). Have everyone guess what they think the baby will be. This one requires a prize to be given later, after the baby is born.

    3) Shower bingo - my personal favorite, because people NEED something to do while the guest of honor is opening gifts (just watching gets reeeeaaaaalllllly boring, especially if it's a large shower). There are free bingo card generators online if you want to make personal ones, or you can buy cards at most craft stores (like Michael's).

    4) How many [X] are in the Yes - I've seen this done with M&Ms in a baby bottle or diapers in a diaper cake. Basically, have slips of paper for people to guess how many of one small object are in a larger object. Closest to the correct # wins

Like PP said, lotions/soaps are nice prizes. You could also do edible gifts, like a small box of chocolates. If you're worried about allergies (scent or food), you could do notepads with pens, coupon organizers, recipe books, fuzzy socks, etc. I've gotten great prizes at Target and Michael's Dollar Spots - I just put a few small things together (for example, right now, Target has little herb containers for $1.00/each. I'd put three of those in a little bag as a prize).

Congrats on the baby, and I hope you have a lovely shower!

  • I love/hate games at showers.  If they are low-key and well-done, they give people something to do besides coo over the 20th onesie Mom-to-be opens and give guests who may not know one another something to talk about.

Don't Say Baby is my favorite, followed by Gift Bingo.  Others that are generally acceptable involve just paper and pen.  You have a name picked out so 1) give guests 5 minutes to think of as many baby-related items they can that begin with the letters of the baby's initials or 2) give guests 5 minutes to write down as many words as they can spell using only the letters of the baby's name. Similarly, I've had success with giving guests 5 minutes to think of as many songs they can that have the word "baby" or "boy/girl" in them. For all, score like Scattergories--1 point for every correct answer with an extra point for every word that no one else in the room came up.  Most points wins.

For prizes, I've seen small gift cards, tote bags, potted plants, soaps/lotions and edibles. If you have a theme, see if you can match it--for example, I threw one with a bee theme and the prizes were from the Burts Bees line or for a garden/flower theme, garden gloves and seeds or a potted herb plant would be appropriate.

  • I'm planning my SIL's baby shower and I have a love/hate thing with the games as well but I hate for people to possibly get bored. I love the gift bingo game and guess the # of something as it gives guests something to do while watching her open gifts and whatnot.

The one game that I saw completely BACKFIRE on the hostess of one baby shower is hand out diapers filled with different baby foods and she had the guests try to guess what flavor food it was. As soon as the mommy to be opened her third diaper, she was sick the remaining portion of the shower.

Love the name Addison! My SIL is naming her daughter Addison as well!

  • Thanks everyone!  :) I didn't plan on doing the yucky games.

And Thanks JillSara!  I was deadset on Addison from the beginning.  I just LOVE the name.
